Modeling Consumer Choices – Techniques and Issues
Abstract: Models of consumer choice, Discrete Choice Models, are a mainstay of the marketing scientist’s toolbox. The initial popularity of this modeling technique was based on the realism of the choice task, we are asking consumers to make choices during a survey that are meant to mimic the real life choice situation. As the Bayesian computation revolution took hold, discrete choice model use exploded as easy to use software became available and hierarchical Bayes computational techniques allowed estimates of individual parameters. We will discuss the practical use of the discrete choice model results and some of the dangers of common interpretations/uses of those results.
About the speaker: Dr. Conklin, a former President of the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Statistical Association, is the Executive Vice-President for Marketing Science in GfK Custom Research, LLC.
