Commissioning custom artwork
I am open to your personal vision for what you would like in your artwork. Some people have very specific things that they would like in their image, and some leave the process up to me. Often a client will have a general idea of what they would like, and I help with artistic guidance until they are satisfied with the concept and design. I then make a detailed pencil sketch of the layout of the drawing, painting or design, and send it via email as a JPEG or PDF file attachment. This seems to be the most efficient way of sending images, although mailing the image through US mail is also available.
Archival Care
All artwork should be treated with care for long life. I recommend displaying drawings and other artwork in an environment without extremes of heat or cold, and out of direct sunlight. For best care, the artwork should be kept protected from environmental pollutants such as cigarette and fireplace smoke and extremes of temperature, which can cause expensive damage, especially to paintings. Framed drawings should be mounted with acid-free rag mats and backing, or at least acid-free where the surfaces meet the artwork, and protected by UV blocking glass or plexiglas. Quality framers will have all of the materials required. Cleaning of acrylic paintings, if needed, should be gentle very occasional dusting with a soft cloth. Paintings should not be framed behind glass, because this can cause vapor condensation and mold. A stiff backing material is often used on the side that faces the wall by professional framers. Canvas can be damaged by pressure on its surface. If a small amount of water soluable material is on the painting surface, very careful cleaning with a soft damp cloth can be tried, while supporting the canvas surface from the back. Generally, cleaning other than occasional dusting should be left to a professional restorer and not attempted by the owner. Prevention is key.
What materials are used in the drawings?
I use quality acid-free artist quality rag paper for the material of all my drawings. "Rag" means that the paper is made from 100 percent cotton, and because it is acid-free, it will not become brittle as it ages, under normal circumstances. Black and white drawing mediums can include pencil, pen and ink, and charcoal. I finish by spraying the surface with a UV-protective fixative, which also helps protect from dirt and grime.
How are the paintings made?
My paintings are painted on hand-stretched high quality cotton duck canvas, gessoed (primed) and then painted with genuine pigment acrylic paint. The paint pigments are mainly from natural mineral sources, suspended in acrylic binder. The paintings, when complete, are finished with a thin layer of art quality polymer varnish, which protects the surface.
How are the murals painted?
I have decided to stop painting murals on building walls, and have limited the size of a mural on board or canvas to about 6 feet wide by 6 feet tall at the largest.
