I recommend using a camera that you won't care if you brake. Making an IR camera is one of those cool projects that are not useful most of the time. However, having an IR camera will help you see the IR lights (including Phones, Remote controls and etc.). It also makes a lot of stuff see-through so you can see through a bottle of coke or the panel of a phone (for what ever reason =] ). I advice you to visit the gallery and see for your self...

IR Camera

  1. Open the camera by unscrewing the screw on the right side

  2. Remove all the plastics, and leave them to the side (including the top button)

  3. Take apart the lenses by rotating it... sooner or later it will fall of! =]

  4. By gently pressing on the end of the lens the back part of the lens (focus) will come out...

  5. Unfortunately this is now "the point of no return". Here you will have to use what ever you feel comfortable with cutting (jigsaw or something... i used kitchen knife). Please cut the lens plastic holder in half as marked with red on the picture below, this is done because the lenses are glued to the plastic and sealed really good, be careful because the it is very possible to scratch and/or brake the lenses... YOU CAN'T REPAIR PARTS!!!

  6. After cutting it gently twist it so it opens in half. You will find a small peace of glass that shines red - this is your filter. Removing it should be relatively easy...unfortunately i could not make pictures as i was working so you will have to do that on your own by using the notes that I've provided. After removing the filter close the lenses back as they were, and keep them safe on the side somewhere...

  7. Now lets go back to the actual camera. Because we removed its filter we will have to put a new one in, but before that we will need to remove the front black plastic holder on the front of the camera. This is done by unscrewing both of the screws on the back of thecamera as shown bellow (sorry for the blur i was having problems taking a clear pic.)

  8. After removing the plastic the camera should look something like this...

  9. Now lets add the filter... Our filter is made of film from a picture camera we only use the end bit where its really dark. Cut it in a "+" shape so it can fit inside the plastic in front of "the eye" of the camera

This is how the cut out should look like...

  10. Now put every thing back together and try your new IR camera.
