Not your typical 4th of July night in 1992

The people heard on the 6 minute 1992 PDX UFO video:
Doug - My fiance at the time. We had been together about 12 years. And still good friends to this day.
Nelja - My daughter, almost 7 years old at the time of this incident

What and where it happened:
It was a cool July 4th night in 1992. We decided this year to stay home and light fireworks for my daughter. It was pretty quiet and we could see no one out on our street. Many of the neighbors were either out celebrating some where, or fast asleep by 10:00 pm. We decided to walk down to the near by park 3 blocks away so as not to wake up the elderly couple that lived directly across the street from my home.
We bagged up a few small ground fireworks (some are quite loud), locked up the house, and headed for the park. On our way to the park we saw a family outside their home lighting sparklers and ground snakes for the kids.
We arrive at the park around 10: 15 pm, and it was very dark. We could not see anyone around, but we could hear at least two people laughing and shouting occassionally in the far North direction of the play ground area where the swings and slides were. At this point, we were at the other end of the park near some trees where people play horse shoe and decided to light the fireworks there.
Doug and I started to dig out the fireworks from the bag, when my daughter asks while pointing " What's that thing in the sky?" Doug and I looked in the direction of where she was pointing.
We saw a very bright intense red light hovering very low in the north east direction from us . It was not moving at all - at first.
In less than a minute of observing this, it then started moving slowly up and coming over towards us.
At first I thought it was some sort of large firework that someone had sent up and was waiting for it to explode or come down. Then my second thought of this after it did not come down and as it was moving closer to us, was that maybe it was some sort of flare.
I kept waiting for this strange light to explode or come down..
It then came directly over us. It looked to be spinning it's very bright spikey lights, then it lowered and hovered over us for several minutes. I was thinking "This was not right" I became terrified, and grabbed Nelja and we ran back and hid under the leafy trees about 15 feet away from where we all stood. Doug just stayed in the same spot, out in the open, while holding the bag of fireworks staring straight up at this thing. Nelja and I were screaming for him to come away from it and get under the tree with us!
FINALLY, after a minute or so, it slowly rose back up and started moving south. Nelja and I came out from under the tree and walked over to where Doug was. We watched this slowly move south until it rose up into the clouds. We waited around a few minutes longer to see if it was going to come back down which it did not. I don't know why, but we either got scared or disinterested, but we decided not to light the fireworks and just head back home. We were at the park for only 10 to 15 minutes but ended up NOT lighting any fireworks. Even my daughter was not upset about the decision to forget the fireworks and just go back home. (very strange! she would have normally threw a tizzy fit!)
As we were walking home, we kept an eye on the sky searching for that strange object. On our way home, we see the same family again that was lighting fireworks earlier, but now all were quiet and watching the sky as we were. We stopped and spoke to the family. There was an elderly lady and I believe she was with her daughter (in her 20's) that standing there holding a very frightened little girl. The little girl was crying and became so upset that the mother had to take her into the house. We also spoke to two young boys about age 8 to 10 years old that were with the elderly lady. All of them were very nervous and speaking of what we all saw and what it did. After about 8 to 10 minutes of chatting with the family, we then continued our walk home all the while we kept searching for the object in the sky.
I get it on Video!
Just as we arrive across the street from my house (3 blocks SOUTH of the park) , we see the bright red slow moving object coming down out of the clouds in the NE direction from us again!
Doug told me to go grab the VHS Camcorder. My daughter and I then ran to my house while I was fumbling with the keys to unlock the door. I then grabbed a VHS tape (didn't care what was on it) and drug out the VHS Camcorder and popped in the VHS Tape. I then checked to be sure the battery was in it and hoping it was charged enough to record. This all took about 2 minutes.
I then step out onto my front porch, switched on the VHS Camcorder but could not see anything through the lens. This is when I started to record but for the first 40 seconds of the video, you only HEAR Nelja and I on the video, then I worry and complain to Doug about not seeing anything. Doug was directly across the street from us while watching the object in the sky. After Doug tell's me to take the LENS CAP OFF! I finally start to record the strange object in the sky that is still NORTH EAST of my house.
After a few attempts of trying to record this, Doug yells to me to cross the street to where he was standing. I keep the camera rolling as I try to keep the object in view. I get across the street and step onto the sidewalk under the power lines. (the power lines are set up across the street of my house. There are no power line poles on my side of the street where I live)
By this time, I am in a stand still position with Nelja on my left side, and Doug is standing on my right side.
As it passes above the power lines that we were standing under, I become very frightened again.. it just moved so slow and steady! (like it was searching for something). The bouncing up and down you see on the video is due to my unstable hold of the video camera - it is NOT the object in the sky. Holding the heavy VHS Camcorder upright in that positon for that amount of time was not easy. As I record this thing, I try to zoom in and out on this object through out the video as well as try to show how high this object was from where we stood.
Later, as I loose sight of it in the camera lens (and arguing with Doug) at the end of this video, we could still vaguely see it in the sky rising slowing back up into the clouds. I stopped recording and we continued to look around for it a few minutes longer - it never came back down. We then decided to go in and watch the VHS tape of this on my television - by this time it was around 11:15pm.
The video of this strange object is just over 6 minutes long from start to finish (with cussing, frustrations and all) After watching it over and over, we decided to call our local TV station, Channel 12 about 11:40 pm. A guy finally answered the phone and seemed disinterested until I told him we have it on video tape. I gave him my name and number but we never heard back from them since. We also thought to call the police department.. but did not bother as it was a non-emergency and they probably would have taken hours to come by.
After we hung up from Channel 12 News, we went outside looking up to see if we could find the object again. Then my neighbors (from across the street, Jim and Linda) came home. We briefly tried to tell them what we saw - they just smiled at us and went inside. We continued looking for the strange light a bit longer until we grew tired and cold and went in for the night.

Then TWO DAYS later on July 6th, 1992 about 9:30 pm, Linda was outside her home chatting with Carleen that lives next door to her house. While they were chatting they saw what we had seen and could not believe it. After they lost sight of it, they came pounding on my door with Linda's two small children explaining what they just witnessed. Linda and Carleen were very excited and quite nervous. They requested to see the video I had taped of the object from two nights before. I told them I would have to show it to them another time as it was quite late.
The night they saw this object was not as late, much clearer out and not as dark. I wished they had hollered at me when they first spotted it. I would have recorded it again.
After showing a few friends the video, one co-worker called me on 08-10-1992 to tell me I should try to report this and if at least find out what this object was. So I called the Air National Guard (per co-workers suggestion) and explained what we saw and video taped and inquired if they had anything in the area at the time. They told me no, not theirs and referred me to MUFON. I called MUFON the same day.
I filled out MUFON's forms, and I was personally interviewed by a MUFON Rep. I signed and dated my "4 page Witness Testimony" on 08-16-1992 and also supplied MUFON with the 6 minute VHS tape video of this object for analysis.
From then on, things went to hell! Oh well.
