THE MEDICINE TREE
River trees so tall and grand,
Honored by all Native bands,
Sharing a limb gave you fame,
Same life-sap in both veins,
Standing together, hand in hand.
Stalwart trees guarding sacred ground,
In your domain, no wars abound,
You've heard coyotes call,
Seen brave warriors fall,
A wonder of Nature seldom found.
Wonder trees by the Spitzee River side,
Two hundred years, there you did abide,
Medicine trees, we weep to recall,
The right of peace you gave to all,
The message remains, tho' the trees have died.
