Karen Severson was born in Victoria,  British Columbia, grew up there, on Vancouver Island and Vancouver.  She studied art at the Universities of British Columbia and Victoria,  receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts with  honours in 1981.  She presently resides at Cobble Hill, Vancouver Island.

Karen Severson's work has been featured in several solo shows on Vancouver Island and Vancouver, as well as numerous group and juried exhibitions in Canada and the USA.

Her use of materials is strongly influenced by her background in printmaking.  Scraping, incision, embossing,  the use of pattern all contribute to rich, tactile mixed media pieces.

I delight in the physical process of painting.  First I prepare the surface, then I glue various papers or fabric and apply an underlayer of translucent colour.  Sometimes the surface is reworked  with scraping, engraving or stressing treatments.  I like surfaces that look aged, ancient and rich.  I love to experiment.  The images I use are from nature: animals, insects, birds, plants, trees.  For the past several years I have been working in encaustic.  Although volatile, this medium hardens into stable surface with a sheen that can be polished with a cloth, and posesses a glowing depth of colour. The suface can also be sculpted and worked in various ways.
