Karen Day-Vath is a self taught artist working in oil and acrylic. She was born and brought up in Manhattan and then moved to Staten Island, NY where she resided for many years prior to moving to Vermont.
Although Karen enjoyed painting as a hobby it wasn’t until she moved to Vermont that her creativity got the best of her and she now paints on a regular basis.
Having been in the restaurant business in NYC she gained a love of jazz from visiting the various jazz clubs in Greenwich Village. Many of her earlier expressionistic abstracts reflect the music scene and memories of the New York City nightlife.
Along with exhibiting her work in different venues she also exhibits her work every year at the Champlain Valley Exposition Art Show at the Blue Ribbon Pavilion in Essex. In 2007 she tied for third place in oil painting with her rendition of "All That Jazz" oil on canvas. In 2009 she won two honorable mentions one for "Blue Grotto" and anothor for an acrylic called "Dreamcatcher", which was sold during the exhibition.
She states, “My work is more expressionism than anything else. I like the creativity of experimentation and the freedom of expression that I feel when I paint and as the paint goes on the canvas it begins to come together".
Karen is now painting mostly with acrylics and is working on a new body of work which will also include mixed mediums and textured artwork, her color and style will differ somewhat from her earlier abstract works in oils which she refers to as her Primary Color Series.
She is mesmerized by impressionistic works, especially those of Monet and Van Gogh and recently has added Cezanne to the list.
Karen has also done two step/by/step presentations for About.com a web based painting forum of which she has been a long standing member and also exhibits her work at theStaart Gallery in St. Albans where she resides.
She is also a member of the Northern Vermont Artist Association, the World Wide Women Artists, and is currently on the executive board of The St. Albans Artists’ Guild.
