The Meaning of Rescue

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed. Right Click: Save Picture As
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry-
so much to regret.
Hmm...Yes there it is, right on top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave-
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough-for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things-
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do-I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage-
Will you still want me?

Oscar (Heinrich!)  Officially Adopted: January 20, 2006

UPDATE: June 2, 2006 - a letter from Heinrich!

Auntie Jen,

How are you? Are Guinness, Jake and Brenna doing well? It's been so long since I said "good bye" to you on that snowy winter day.  Mommy told me we are going to come visit you this summer though!  I'm very excited at this news and am studying very hard to be a proper gentleman.

I had a tummy infection for a while :(  I was a bad boy and drank some stagnant pond water.  Mommy told me not to drink it but I didn't listen - - the water smelled so yummy and all these little green algae dots graced the surface so I lapped it up!  Mommy was maaaaaaad!

Over the next couple of days I didn't feel so well though and I had to go potty a lot so Mommy took me to see Dr. Kulow.  Dr. Kulow felt bad that I was sick but said that I had matured quite a bit and was very well behaved!  The medication was yummy, especially when Mom mixed it with Gerber Baby Beef Food.  Mom didn't like the medication.  She said it stunk and scrunched up her nose when she opened the jar, but I loved it!!

I had a very good Memorial Day weekend.  Godmother Laura was in town from Boston and I got to spend the weekend at her cottage on Cayuga Lake!  I had a lot of fun!  Godmother has seven wooded acres on the Lake so I got to run around and smell all the trees and bushes.  The best part was the swimming!!  Mommy and I picked out several water toys before going down there and I got to play with them all in the water!!  Mom would throw the toys in from the dock and I would swim from the shore to go get them.

Towards the end of our stay I got very upset and started to cry because I couldn't jump off the dock...I was very scared.  I wanted to jump off so bad to get the toys but I was too nervous and had to swim in from shore.  Mommy says once the water gets warmer she will jump in with me from the dock and I won't be so scared.  I hope so!!

I go to daycare three times a week now.  Emily at Daycare says I am the only Weim who plays in the kiddie pools outside.  Sometimes I get a little overzealous though and "mark" the pools....but I just like playing in the water so much I don't want to share!!

Towards the end of the day I get very tired and miss Mommy so I am happy she comes to pick me up.  One time I got so excited to see her I jumped up on a chair, leapt onto the top of a tall filing cabinet and then jumped through the open wall "window" into Mommy's arms.  Mommy was very stunned but was happy to see me too.

I just finished my Tracking class.  My teacher Bob says I have a "very good nose."  I'm not sure what that means but Mommy says it means I find a lot of yucky things very easily.  I don't think they are yucky though!  I always bring Mom really nice gifts but sometimes I don't think she gets very excited about them.  The other day I disappeared into this marsh filled with lots of cattails.  I dug and sniffed around and found the most amazing old sneaker.  It was awesome!  I was very proud and I jumped out of the marsh and brought it to Mommy but she said it was yucky and to "Leave it!"  Oh well...one day I'll fish her out something really fantastic!

Froggies are my new interest.  I love to listen to them gulp and burp.  Sometimes I stand and point on the edge of the swap where they sit.  I listen long and hard to their chatter but then I get real scared after a few minutes and I run away and yelp!!  Mommy thinks this is really funny and I don't know why because I think these frogs might be dangerous!  I haven't seen one yet but judging by their noises they must be HUGE!!

Everything else is going good.  I saw these really huge dogs the other day.  Mommy insists they aren't dogs though and calls them "horses."  I'm not sure what they are but they're reeeaaallll  big!!!  Bigger than George the Great Dane at daycare!!!    I ran up to one of the horses and smelled his feet.  He smelled strange.  Then I started barking and barking and barking.  The horse kept walking on the trail though and ignored me.  Mommy told me not to go near them anymore.  Oh well...I think they're creepy anyway.

Well I'm very tired and I am going to go lay out on the balcony.  If Mom isn't looking I am going to bury my nose in the Impatient plants.  I think this is a lot of fun...I love getting dirt on my face!!  Shhhh....don't tell though!

I hope to see you soon this summer!

Heinrich   XOXO

They are quite bonded to each other. He is more reliant on her than her to him. She is more dominant and independent.
We were hoping to have Charlie and Maggie stay together, and they did!

Hi Ms Jen Mom says I should write you and let you know how happy I am and I should be added to your success stories page....because I am a success. Because of you and my new mom I can live my last years loved, happy(most of the time) and well taken care of. You see, I will be 11 yrs old on Valentine's Day and because the two of you cared so much, you kept me from being put down. For anyone who doesn't know my story, my master became a bachelor again and he left me at the kennel every weekend. I was very unhappy, skinny and felt so lonely. He gave you only a few days to find me a home or he was going to have me put down. You contacted my new mom, Debi. She and another volunteer tranported me from Manhattan NY to Southport NY. I met my new 9 yr old brother, Cosmo and it was love at first site. I now get to run around in a big yard and I have grass under my feet instead of concrete sidewalks. I play with my brother and we do have our little tifts, but I know he loves me. I even get to sleep with my mom(I wormed my way onto the bed). Oh, and I have kids to play with. I love kids. I get fed twice a day and get treats...what more could a dog ask for? So, thank you Jen for helping find my new forever home. I hope all the other weims that you help have it as good as me. I have attached a before pic of me and an after. You can see how happy I am. Thank You Lily             _______________________________________________

MARLEY

Marley was returned to NYSWR after playing too rough with his weimey sister, giving her a cut on her face, in his first adoptive home. He was found last summer wandering around Rochester, NY, terrified of humans.  He is still rather scared, but has come a long way.  With some love, patitience and training Marley will make a great addition to some lucky home!

Yound Grey Male Weim - approx. 2 y.o. being fostered in Attica, NY.

UPDATE:5/15/07 Marley is doing very well... he is starting to warm up, though he is still very scared.  He is walking better on the leash and is learning about staying in his crate quietly.  He likes to play with other dogs.  He is learning to be gentle when taking treats and playing with other dogs.
He needs more training, but is progressing with love and patience!

UPDATE: 6/1/07

Marley has learned to sit and is learning to continue to trust humans and has made a huge improvement walking on a leash, responding to his name, and coming when called.  He is such a love muffin, though is very scared ast first, he has warmed up to us and now seeks out attention and is even giving kisses!

I think that he is going to need an obideince class to continue socialization and working on the basics.  He went with us to Weim Nationals in Pittsburgh and did WONDERFULLY with all of the people and dogs around.  I was very pleased with his behavior and calmness!

He has been learning to play frisbee and chase balls and is bringing them back almost all of the way now.  I think he would do better with a fenced yard, so if he is startles he cannot run,  but is doing OK on a long lead when we are working on his commands.

CHINA

China is the newest member of the New York State Weimaraner Rescue family.  China was saved from a miserable living environment and taken to the SPCA.  She had many folks interested in her because of her sweet demeanor, love of walking on a leash (she does it so nicely!) and wonderful temperament.  BUT - China has heartworm - and treatment in NY costs between $600 - $1000.  So NYSWR took her in to a foster home so she may be treated.  BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!  NYSWR is a 501-c-3 tax exempt charity which helps weimaraners in need find their forever homes.

NYSWR spends its money only for the dogs - for things such as vet treatments, spays, neuters, and in China's case, heartworm treatments.  PLEASE help NYSWR continue to assist weimaraners in need.  Without generous donations of both time and money, NYSWR wouls cease to exist.

Please help China on her journey to a forever loving home!

UPDATE!

7-27-09

China's treatments are going great and she will likely be ready for adoption SOON!  China's treatment has already cost $600-$700... and she will need to be spayed before adoption. Thank you to everyone for your genoraous donations!

*****
UPDATE 8/10/09

China went to the vet and she is out of danger and can now have some activity!  We are working on getting her slowly up to the usual weim crazies with short trips off lead in the yard and are working our way up to longer walks on leash in the woods.

She is still very zealously attacking her food when fed... you wouldn't know she gets fed three times a day to watch her eat... but now she does a happy dance when she knows that food is coming.  She will take treats gently is alone, but is a "snatcher" and a bit overbearing if other dogs are around.

She loves her dog bed, but recently joined me on the couch for some snuggel time.

At this time she may go to a foster-to-adopt home - as she cannot be spayed for 3 more months (plus or minus depending on her testing).  She is very healthy according to the vet and she can be fostered until she is spayed and an official adoption can take place.

She is a very sweet girl and is good with my 18 month old baby.  She is also great with the rest of the dogs, though if they step on/near her she will sometimes yelp as if in pain - though most times noone touched her.  So, she is a bit skittish, (especially with men) at first and is still a bit skittish in general, but is doing much better.

You can tell she is feeling better :) as she now comes up and begs for attention.

UPDATED 10/09

China was adopted by her "foster-to-adopt" family.  She is now spolied with ALL the love as she is the only dog in the house and she likes it just fine!

China thanks everyone for their donations which allowed ehr to be treated for heartworm, spayed, and adopted into her new wonerderful and loving life.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
