As a self-representing Artist who attends Art Exhibitions and sales as well as run them I distinctly DO NOT wish to pay commission upon my hard earned sales nor do I expect other Artists to pay me any from their sales at my Original Art Exhibitions a percentage on their sales either.
Art galleries and Art traders are in business - we provide a product and they provide a sales opportunity or service for a variable fee, some double the price you want and add VAT on, some charge 60%.50%. 40%, 30% less, if you are happy with this arrangement then fine and I wish you good luck. I, myself have had both good and bad experiences with Retail Art Galleries.
At this present time I am selling personally direct to the public either at Art Exhibitions/sales, mine and others or via the Internet. I am in a fortunate position that I have a repeat client base, who will contact me directly and either purchase, commission or receive completed works direct from me or via word of mouth they may contact me and purchase via an Art Gallery on the Internet. As we all know there are no guarantees in the Art game and there can be long periods without sufficient sales.
Here is another option
IF you have not got an Internet presence or you want to increase your profile and would be happy joining a NON-commission pay one affordable annual fee only Internet based art Gallery then I can recommend www.affordablebritishart.co.uk . The site owner is a good friend of mine and she believes in Artists working for Artists as she is an Artist herself - Ros Collander. Tell her Tony sent you.
There other Internet Art sites, some are very commercial, fee based, usage based, or in some cases free but as all things in life - you get out what you put in - with people who are like minded and who consider the Artist before the product first then you know at least you are associating with those that understand the artists need and who may give of their advice freely as well as their time and effort.
There is a whole underground and substrate of artists out there working for themselves, we are here to share our works and sell them, but what is more important - there is a developing mindset in which we are no longer being perceived as being at the bottom of the 'food' chain....there is a 'quiet' revolution going on and I for one am in it. no one need be alone anymore - get involved, feel it, love it, live it.
