A moonlit night - a cloudless sky

Finds me sitting all alone

Lost in my thoughts of you

A gentle breeze cools the night air

As I gaze at the stars above

I hear your voice behind me

Calling my name softly

As you settle down beside me

I quickly wipe the tears

So that you won't see them

You do not speak at first

Just look up at the sky

Then gently you take my hand

And slowly begin to caress it

As I try not to let the tears fall

You know why I am here

You know what I am thinking

It is such a hopeless situation for you

To be loved so deeply

Yet not be able or willing to return it

It is not in you to be harsh

To shatter so fragile a dream

I do not want you to be sad

I only want you to be happy

To know that you are loved

You start to speak - to explain

My finger presses on your lips

Sshhh - there is no need for words

I do not need clarification

On what I know deep in my heart

Let me treasure this time with you

Alone in the still of the night

My hand still clasped in yours

Your nearness enveloping me

Making my heart beat faster

I ask no more than this tonight

This is all I need

Except maybe just one thing

Just one lingering kiss

To last me a lifetime!
