Executive Branch

Description - The Executive Branch is composed of eight different units; Public Relations, Finance, Community Relations, Student Affairs, Ethics & Conduct, Administrative Assistant, Academic Affairs, and Projects. We at SBG are devoted to continuing the traditions and heritage of student excellence at Gallaudet University. Together the Executive Branch is responsible for providing a variety of programs and services for the student body. An example of these programs include our new Bison Club program which takes place sometime this semester.

President: Noah Beckman

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- To serve as liaison between the Student(s), Faculty, Staff and the Administration.

- To oversee the Vice-President's performance.

- Primary mission shall be to serve the undergraduate students of Gallaudet University to the full capacity.

- Implements and carries out all laws and statues passed by Student Congress through Executive Cabinet.

- To have authorization to sign all checks along with the Director of Finances.

- President shall appoint the Chief Justice and Justices.

- Form all ad hoc committees for the Executive Branch as deemed necessary.

- Acts as the official host and representative of the student cody to all dignitaries, internal and external.

- To approve all committees, chairpersons, members, and proceedings related to the Executive Branch.

- To give the State of the SBG address at the first meeting of 2nd semester or last meeting of the first

  semester, with the exception of another date of the approval of the Senators.

- May remove any executive Branch officers.

- May issue directives to members of the Executice officers.

- Performs all other duties as specified in SBG Bylaws.

- Shall have the authority to veto any motions passed by Student Congress.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Must be a student for at least two semesters at Gallaudet.

- Must be a full-time student the following academic year for both semesters.

- Experience with the SBG system.

- Communication skills.

- Elected by Gallaudet University undergraduate students.

Vice President: Candace Jones

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- To serve as liaison between the Cabient members and President.

- Advises and supports the President.

- Primary mission shall be to serve the undergraduate students of Gallaudet University to the full capacity.

- Presides over the Executive Cabinet.

- Shall attend or send a delegate to Legislative and Executive meetings.

- Performs all other duties as specified in SBG by-laws.

- Works on any new project the President asks to be done or to be set up.

- Become a member, or appoints a representative, to any appropriate advisory board established by the

  University Administration. The representative shall:

             1. Attend all meetings of the advisory board.

             2. Give advice to the board on any issue, based on reports made by the Cabinet.

             3. Report to the Vice President or the Cabinet during the Cabinet meeting of any important issues.

- Vice President must oversees the Cabinet:

   1. Make sure all Cabinet members are performing duties as assigned.

   2. Maintains internal harmony within the Cabinet (responsible for solving problems between co-workers.)

   3. Delegates projects to Cabinet members.

   4. Advises Directors and other personnel when needed (assists with problem solving.)

   5. Meets with Cabinet members by the way of staff meetings:

a. To update them on important information.

b. To hear their weekly reports.

c. To ensure all is well in each office.

   6. Goes to any committee meeting if he/she is expected to or asked to by the President.

- Makes fair decisions in SBG related matters with discretion along with the President.

- Is expected to attend all Student Congress meetings.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Must be a student for at least two semesters at Gallaudet.

- Must be a full-time student the following academic year for both semesters.

Administrative Assistant: Tori Calaman

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Takes notes during staff meetings and distributes to directors when compeleted.

- Take care of all maintenance requests for the office, including for the computers.

- Orders supplies for the office on a regular basis.

- Is responsible for maintaining the Executive Branch's email account.

- Makes appointments with the Directors for any student that wishes to do so.

- Coordinates the usage of the Boardroom.

Director of Finance: Andres Piedrahita

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authoritizations:

- SBG Director of Finance, SBG President, the Dean of Student Affairs are the only employees who know

  the safe combination. The safe combination MUST BE changed if any of us leaves.

- Must arrange all three Branches's total payroll salaries for the semester.

- Must give the payroll form to the employee to fill out.

- Shall give the time cards to the employees to be done by the payroll deadline. These time cards need to

  be signed by SBG Director of Finance and Campus Activities.

- SBG Director of Finance, SBG President, Campus Activities and Director of Student Development must

  sign the Employee Report.

- needs to be notifield of the Unit Fee total results by September and January.

- must arrange access to SBG account with the cooperation of the appropriate departments on campus,

  including but not limited to Campus Activities.

- must arrange a Budget Plan with leeway for a summer budget addendum. The Budget Plan proposed by

  SBG Director of Finance already been reviewed by and discussed with SBG President, Speaker of the

  House, and the Chief Justice.

- Must present the final Budget Plan through SBG President to the Student Congress for approval.

Director of Public Relations: Taurean Burt

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Publicizes any minor event hosted by SBG and any organizations.

- When a major event is hosted or sponsored by SBG, oversees and approves the information in any

  format that is distributed to Gallaudet community.

- Is responsible for following through any media requests to the Executive Branch, from newspapers,

  BisonTV, or any other interested parties, including general information about SBG or interview requests.

- Give regluar reports to the community on the Executive Branch and/or SBG's actions/progress through

  visual exhibits (e.g. bulletin boards, email, website, BisonTV, etc) and at Student Congress meetings.

- Responsible for Public Relations Order Form.

Director of Academic Affairs: Trevor Brennan

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Represent the SBG in all academic-related areas, including on the Council of Undergraduate Education.

- Is responsible for overseeing faculty evaluations when issued by the SBG.

- Works closely with the Dean of the College of Liberal Art, Science, and Technology and other

  administrative leaders to insure communication between the faculty and the students.

- Is responsible for looking into complaints filed by the student regarding faculty, grades, courses, and other matters of academic concern.

Qualifications:

Director of Student Affairs: Chris Corrigan

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Represent the SBG in all student life related areas, and appoint a representative when requested.

- Is responsible for looking into complaints filed by the students.

- Oversees any committees established to enhance or improve student life.

- At least 2.0 GPA.

Director of Community Relations: Jessica Franks

 

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Decide the dates of events and weekend events.

- Host a lottery day for all organizations with dates chosen.

- Selects chairpersons for various events under the Executive Branch.

- Responsible for appoint organization's room reserve.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Director of Projects: Jeanine Wiesblatt

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Plans any special events for SBG, including ASL nights, EyesFest, Gallaudet/Clerc Day, in the purpose of

  reaching out to the community and promoting a common link.

- Oversees the SBG Fellow Program

- Hosts SBG Booths. ( If requested.)

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Director of Ethics & Conduct: Robyn Miller-Oliver

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Is responsible for looking into complaints filed by the students regarding procedures of the Department of

  Public Safety, Judicial Affairs, appeals with faculty, and other matters of student access and rights.

- Oversees any committee established to enhance or improve student rights such as the Provost's

  Committee on Language and Communication.

- Review all procedures on campus related to student appeals, pressing charges against students, to

  ensure all rights are in place and protected.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Legislative Branch

Description - The Student Congress is composed of # Senators with Alternate Senators from all active Student Organizations, who are elected each fall and spring to serve one year. The Speaker of House presides over all Student Congress meetings and handles all legislative matters. The Student Congress meets on a bi-weekly basis during the fall & spring terms to discuss new motions and to improve the university based on the student's ideas.

The Student Congress consists of four (4) standing committees and some ad-hoc committees:

AD HOC Committee (ADHOC) - Reviews legislation and recommends changes concerning Student Government Constitution, Statutes, and Senate Rules. This committee is elected by a majority vote of the Senate.

Finance Committee (FAO) - Reviews and investigates the use of all funds allocated through SBG Funds & Student's Unit Fees to ensure that they are being used properly. This committee is appointed by the senators on the Finance Committee.

Public Relations Committee (PR) - Oversees all aspects of BisonTv, ensures that BisonTv's program is a successful one.

Rules, Regulations, & Order Committee (RRO) - Reviews legislation and recommends changes concerning Student Government Constitution, Statutes, and Senate Rules. This committee is elected by a majority vote of the Senate.

 

Speaker of the House: Ian Jones

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Be responsible to call the senators to and preside over all regular meeting and special meetings.

- Be responsible for maintaining the meeting in order.

- Appoint a Secretary, two Sergeant-at-Arms and a Parliamentarian with the majority of the Student Congress Senators.

- Announce the agenda of any meetings 48 hours in advance.

- Have no voting power.

- Not be a senator.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Vice Speaker of the House: Matt Goeb

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Serve in the absence of the Speaker.

- Assume the duties of the Speaker if the Speaker is removed from the position by impeachment, resignation, or death.

- Assist the Speaker in performing the duties of the Speaker's office.

- Accompany the Speaker to Student Congress meetings.

- Coordinate the actions of the committees.

- Monitor the parliamentary procedures of the Student Congress meetings and resolve any conflicts arising in regards to the parliamentary procedure in question in absence of the Parliamentarian.

- Have no voting power expect to break a tie.

- Not be a senator.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Secretary: Sara Collins

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Record and publish the minutes of each meeting.

- Notify the Senator of the agenda before each meeting.

- Take attendance for each meeting.

- Deliver all the motions to the SBG President that requires his/her signature after having such motions

  verified and signed by the Speaker.

- Do any correspondence necessary on behalf of the Speaker

- Have no voting power.

- Not be a Senator.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Parliamentarian: Richard Goode

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Oversee the Parliamentary procedure during any Student Congress meeting.

- Have no say in the Student Congress meeting, except for issue dealing with the parliamentary procedure. Only Speaks at the request by senators relating to parliamentary procedure.

- Have no voting power.

- Attend to all Student Congress meeting unless a valid reason is given under the discretion of the Speaker.

- Not be a sentor.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Sergeant-at-Arms: Chaim Levinson

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Assist the Speaker in maintaing order during Student Congress meeting, tallying votes, and informing the results to the Speaker.

- Perform other duties as desired by the Speaker during meeting of the Student Congress.

- Have no voting power.

- Not be a Senator.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Judicial Branch

Description - The Judicial Branch of SBG is there to council and protect the rights of the student Body by insuring the rights of the individual through the interpretation of the constitution.

Chief Justice: Megan Malzkhun

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Be present at all Student Congress meeting, though not all Justices need to be present. At least one(1)  

  Justice shall be present at all Student Congress meetings.

- Determine the constitutionality of any law; thereforce, the Justices shall have authority to invalidate

  actions that, in their considered judgment, conflict with the Constitution or Bylaws.

- Nullify and Void any law that the Judicial Branch finds unconsitutional or defective on other grounds, and

  order such other remedies and relief.

- Interpret and enforce all rules and orders on case before the court, in compliance with the provisions of

  the Constitution and Bylaws.

- Excuse himself/herself should there be any conflict of interest, or any appearance of impropriety, in the

  pending case. The determination of whether a conflict of interest is present shall be based on an

  objective, not subjective standard.

- Shall be responsible for assuring the legality of all SBG activities with respect to the University and SBG

  policies.

-  Shall not initiate investigative procedure for the removal from offices or vacancies of any member of

   the Student Congress or Executive Cabinet, but shall hear allegations of wrongdoings for deference to

   the Judicial Branch.

- Conduct and certify the result of all elections of the SBG. A copy of the election rules and regulations

  shall be prepare and submitted to the Student Congress for approval at least two(2) week prior general

  election.

Qualifications:

- At least 2.0 GPA.

- Communication skills.

Associate Justice: [Vacant]

Duties/Responsibilities/Authorizations:

- Oversee the administration of the Oath of Affirmation to the incoming SBG President and incoming SBG

  Vice President by the President of Gallaudet University, or a designated representation by the President

  of Gallaudet University

- To work with Chief Justice.

- Be present at all Student Congress meeting, though not all Justices need to be present. At least one(1)  

  Justice shall be present at all Student Congress meetings.
