What is scratchboard? That is the number one question I receive from people who view my works.
In short, Scratchboard is a very thin wooden panel that has a thin layer of white porcelain clay on it. On top of the white clay, there is a layer of black ink. To render an image, the artist uses a sharp object such as a craft knife, and scratches off the layer of black ink. Some of my works are also on white scratchboard. The whiteboard has the wood and clay, but no layer of ink. Ink, colored pencil, watercolor or several other types of mediums can be applied by the artist. The artist then scratches off the colors to reveal the white beneath. ALL of my works are on AMPERSAND ART'S Scratchbord.
