Nearly 2000 Flute players from around the world assembled together at the 2009 Flute Convention in NYC to break the Guinness Book of World Records for performing in the largest flute quartet ensemble consisting of about 500 flute players to each part.   The levels of these flutists ranged from high school level kids to internationally renowned professional flute players.

In my opinion, the quartet sounded really good for nearly 2000 flutists!  I usually find 20 flute players in a high school band difficult to listen to.  But to my surprise, I felt that these 2000 flutists sounded better than expected.  Although it was impossible for 2000 flutists to sound professional, I think that the playing was quite high for putting together so many flutes.

Together we celebrated the 70th birthday of Sir James Galway who continues to play at a level only achieved by a select handful in the world.   Although Jean Pierre Rampal is responsible for being the first person to bring flute music all over the world and for being the first person to fill a concert hall that only violinists cellists, or pianists could fill,  I believe that it is Sir James Galway who brought the rest of people in the world together by cross-pollinating different musical styles bringing in an even wider audience.    When I younger,  I hated hearing Annie's song by Galway but I agree that it was rather brilliant to play such music to engage more music lovers together.   And at the NYC National Flute Convention, I feel that Sir James Galway truly earned his title as being the greatest flutist alive today because he was far better than anyone else performing at the convention.    And at the age of 70, he rocked.   Although there are too many flute players competing for orchestral positions for few spots available, I believe that few if not any, can rival Galway.   And I heard none at his level  at the convention.   The greatest flute players of the past century are already dead and I miss hearing the Great Samuel Baron, Julius Baker, and Monsieur Rampal.

Once at the NYC National Flute Convention, I was trying out a head joint.  And behind me appears "Jimmy" who then proceeded to play the same flute headjoint that I had just put down.  Although I was surprised that he was right behind and then standing next to me, he was out of practice that day.   However, Galway obviously rises to the occasion for important concerts when needed and he showed his ability as a true master on his 70th birthday at the National Flute Convention.  I heard no one who rivaled him among the current famous flutists performing that night.   In fact, I felt that they was a hole in the flute world without Samuel Barron, Julius Baker, and Jean Pierre Rampal.    Samuel Barron was a master teacher that will be dearly missed.

Millenium Chamber Symphony is a bare bones chamber orchestra that I created by combining award winning chamber group musicians. Most of the performers from the major music conservatories in NYC and are under the age of 25. This is a conductorless orchestra. I no longer have enough room on this website to include a sample of our music making at the Unitarian Church in Brooklyn Heights. However, most of the musicians of the orchestra have graduated on to major symphony orchestras.
