I came across news regarding the Susan Boyle becoming instant celebrity after her appearance in Britains Got Talent 2009.
I must say that I was totally thrilled and inspired after listening to her singing. Here's her full length performance (with best sound quality I can find online). Do wait with patience, I promise it will be good!
I have been playing undead live! and found that there have been no compilation of undead live court code. So while looking for code, I compiled a list for easy searching. Enjoy. Btw, I am overlord, add me: 151937485
Please post your code at the comments section so I can add them to the list. Thanks.
Wolfenstein 3D 1992 first person shooter games was ported onto iphone. It was very playable and bring back sweet memories. Check out the my blog entry here:
Last week, I registered an account with ANSYS customer portal. Over the weekend, with my university customer account (No way I can afford my own copy. LOL. It cost ten of thousands of dollars per year for the license!), I downloaded ANSYS classics and ANSYS workbench. Wohoo. If you don't know, ANSYS is a powerful finite element analysis package that can be used to model different mechanical problem (statics, dynamics, thermal, you name it). ANSYS was founded by John Swanson, an engineer from Cornell University. More about ANSYS here:
With ANSYS, my collection of engineering simulation software is increased. Currently I owned FLUENT, GAMBIT, ANSYS (All variety of ANSYS products for FEA and CFD analysis) and Pro Engineer Wildfire (mostly for 3D modeling. I am experience with Solidworks for 3D modeling. Still exploring ProE) on my laptop.
Hopefully, with ANSYS on my computer, I can brush up my FEA skills while weathering through this economy.
I have been following badminton recently. And I watched a remarkable match by Chong Wei vs Lin Dan in men's single final. Chong Wei defense was solid, returning all the smashes by Lin Dan. The rallies were very long also. His consistency with the shuttle is second to none. When Lin Dan failed to kill Chong Wei with his smashes, he will have to play stroke with Chong Wei and became very frustrated. In the end, Chong Wei won! Here's a short clip of one of the rallies and prize giving ceremony.
Oh, and if you want to watch the whole match, it is available for download here:
Today I went to the dragon day. Dragon day is an annual event at Cornell University that occurs on Friday right before Spring break. Basically, the dragon was built by the first year architecture students. And on this day, they will be having procession around campus. While passing by engineering quad, the engineering student will "welcome" the dragon with Phoenix! But usually phoenix is of no match to dragon. lol. More about dragon day here:
Architecture students marched from East Ave, marching towards engineering quad. Many are in some weird costumes.
Dragon is coming!
Me in front of Phoenix.
Dragon is clashing with Phoenix in front of engineering quad!
The dragon rose!
And the dragon spread its mighty wings, preparing for battle, intimidating the Phoenix by engineering students! LOL.
The Phoenix ran away, so I decided to take a photo with the dragon! LOL.
The dragon parade reached williard straight hall, marching towards Art's Quad.
While taking photos, we saw some reindeer running wild! He came and harassing us with weird questions. I basically know that they are just having fun, so I don't take them seriously.
More picture with the dragon.
The dragon reaches Art's Quad, waiting for its demisal.
This year the dragon is lucky. The new New York State law prohibit open burning of anything other than wood and agricultural products. So the dragon lives on!
So basically, this year's Dragon Day was a success. I like the dragon more than other years. The phoenix also looks nice, though a little smaller and less sophisticated. However, given only a budget of 400 this year, I am impressed that the engineering students are able to pull this through. Kudos!
Unfortunately though, there are some architecture students that ran a little too wild and got the attention of police. And sure enough when they try to argue with the police, they get the taste of going to the police station in handcuff! Here's the picture:
I heard other architecture students commenting to police: "today is dragon day, we are just having fun", that's rather immature and irresponsible words coming from a college student in my opinion (btw, Cornell Architecture college ranks number one is United States). However immature he may be, I do think that the police officers were too harsh on him. Handcuff a student?! that's not right! It is not as if he is some criminal or what! I will definitely follow this story and will update when I know what happen.
Anyway, the moral of the story, have fun, but do have some self restraint, or face the consequences!
Today, my TA who taught me in one of my sophomore design class emailed me with some questions on CFD tutorials that I have developed few years back. He reminded me of the "instructional video" that me and my team created for one of our design project. For the design project, we designed the ultimate rock crusher that will amplify force applied by user to crush rocks! That sure was good old days.
Sophomore year spring semester was the most hectic semester for most Cornell Mechanical Engineering students as we have a lot of core courses packed in one semester. This design class was the most time consuming of all! I still remember how we burned midnight oil trying to finish the report for our project. And at 4am, we still managed to make some hilarious video on how-to and how-not-to operate our rock crusher! A definitely must watch.
Course: MAE 225 Mechanical Synthesis
Year: Spring 2005
Project: Rock Crusher
Remember to watch until the later part. It is very funny. For the last part of video, I was the one talking.
Baby carrots (5) Green Onion Sesame oil Cooking oil
Steps: A -> B -> C -> D Part A (Create Egg mix): 1. Break 3 eggs into a bowl 2. Put 3 tablespoon of soy sauce 3. Put 1 tablespoon of sesame oil 4. Put 2 tablespoon of honey 5. Sprinkle some white pepper 6. Mix everything in the bowl thoroughly
Part B (Preparing Tofu) 1. Cut tofu into 32 pieces by keep dividing every cut into half 2. Mix the tofu with the egg
Part C (Frying the tofu) 1. Heat the oil in the pan 2. Fry the tofu (premixed with egg) by placing them one by one into the pan (remember not to pour the whole egg mix into frying pan) 3. Flip the tofu to the opposite for frying. The tofu are done when they are golden brown. Place them in a plate
Part D (Frying remaining egg mix and tofu) 1. Add more cooking oil if needed into the pan that was used to fry tofu. 2. Stir fry 2 tablespoon minced garlic and chopped baby carrots (add tomatoes and shrimp/dried shrimp if desired) until some slight brownish color 3. Pour the remaining egg mix and fry them. 4. Cook until the egg mix is slightly brown and dry up 5. Pour 4 tablespoon of soy sauce, add honey or sugar (4 table spoon) and 0.5 tablespoon of lemon concentrate 6. Add tofu immediately after step 5 7. Stir fry the tofu and egg mix 8. Sprinkle some pepper 9. Add green onion in the end and stir fry for a while.
Note: The amount of soy sauce, honey, pepper, lemon concentrate are just based on estimate. Add more or less according to your liking.
It has been a month since I work as simulation support engineer. I developed a couple of Cornell wiki-based multimedia CFD tutorials. Also investigated the discrepancy between modeling result and experimental result. I find it surprising that it is hard to simulate the simple potential flow over cylinder (uniform flow + doublet) in FLUENT using inviscid viscous model. Potential flow is not possible in reality because of the separation of boundary layer. Anyway, after asking my professor recommendation, I managed to obtain a mesh that give reasonable representation of potential flow over cylinder.
Ok, shifting to other stuff. Last week, I had an interview with Royal Dutch Shell. The interview was behavioral based and went really well. One of the question was:
Tell me a time where you are working on something and anticipated potential problem before hand.
I just use the example of my research project and talking about how I anticipated I will be having hard time finding literature data and how I take initiative to overcome this problem.
Now we will move on to cooking. I cook hell a lot since I am so free and I like cooking so much. I made Curry Chicken, 5 different fish dish using tilapia fish, Ginger chicken, mushroom chicken, Chinese herbal chicken soup, sambal Kang Kung, Sambal Chicken, you name it.
I also helped out Cornell Malaysian Association to cook for their Malay Wedding Event. We spent whole day cooking at Okienshield. It was really a great experience cooking for 150 people and using all the big pot and stove! The event was tremendously successful thanks to the all the CMA committee members.
Shifting now to more personal side of blog. As some of you might know, my eldest brother died in a fatal accident about four years ago. He met with an accident while on his way to report duty to Petronas. It was really saddening indeed for our whole family. His court case has been going on since. My parents had to travel down to Teluk Intan to attend the court case. Last week, I was told that our lawyer advised that we settle the case outside court as further prolonging the court case will not bring any advantage to us. My parents decided to go along with the lawyer and settle the case off court (my parents is also tired of traveling already). We were paid some monetary damage as a result (not that it will bring my brother back to life). I am glad that this court case is done for. My parents do not have to be saddened every time they attend the court anymore. And I guess, I can say that, we can move on better now. My great brother will always remains within my heart.
Yesterday, I invited a bunch of friends for Chinese New Year gathering. We had a pot luck style dinner. I cooked Hokkien Mee (Penang Prawn Mee). Others bring Chicken Rendang, Chicken Satay, Bak Kut Teh, and tons of desserts and Malaysian cookies. It was really fun! Ok, here's the pictures and some descriptions.
Eating cookies while waiting for the rest of people to arrive. What's with my facial expression?! Hokkien Mee is on the table! It looked so tasty. It was tasty indeed!
Dinner started. Everyone watching Russell Peter eating. He was hilariously good! All the food was really good. You see most dishes were already empty.
Another pictures. 15 people in one small living room! That's the record already.
Front view of everyone. Everyone is so happy because of CNY! Chiun Lin tried to hide to the furthest right thinking that he will be out of the photo. He was wrong! The camera I used was super wide angle lense! Haha.
After dinner, we chatted for quite some time until about 11pm because everyone went back. This year is considered quite happening already and thanks everyone for coming.
While hunting for more appropriate job, I am currently hired by Cornell University as a Simulation Support Engineer. I will be helping professor to develop CFD simulation and update them onto website. This is the website that I will manage.
Some of the tutorials available were ported from the old website where I had contributed to a few of the development of the tutorials.
I am really glad that my professor is hiring me and Mechanical Engineering department is willing to pay for it. Last time I heard, Cornell University is having hiring freeze. But I guess if professor is willing to sponsor using his grants, that's different story. Now my burden is less while looking for a new job.
BTW, Chinese New Year is just around the corner. This coming Monday. I am planning a gathering dinner tomorrow with friends. We are going to have a lot of good food! Will definitely blog about that, I hope. LOL
I am just back from Shell Drilling and Production Camp. It sure was a great experience! I got to know a lot of nice people from University of Texas and learn a lot about drilling, production and subsea in general. Anyways, here's a quick video that I made using animoto. I will try to blog more about the camp later.
This is a short video that I made for May 2008 graduation. This might be a little late. LOL. But hope you like it. Is very easy to make. Just use Animoto.
In the video: Jon San, Chiun Lin, Ellen, Ian, Jesse, Joseph, Richard Zhao, Vikas.
Feel free to add the missing name in the comments area.
Early tomorrow morning, I will leave Ithaca and head for New Orleans, LA for Shell Production and Drilling Camp. This is some sort of recruiting camp sponsored by Shell. Each year, 40+ students from US are invited to the camp and I am one of the lucky 40! I will be back after on Friday Jan 16. During the camp, I will be going through general drilling and production process. Some sort of water survival technique will also be taught.
I am so excited about the camp. I sure hope I don't get stranded at Ithaca tomorrow because of the winter storm today! Let me pray hard that I can fly out tomorrow. And hopefully I can land a job with Shell.
Today Ellen told me that she met with Nizar, my friend from Malaysia at AA. I bet Nizar must have a lot to talk about. LOL. Hopefully she still has a good impression of me upon listening to the Nizar telling stories about me. LOL.
Ok, today I also submitted 4 job applications. Hopefully I will hear from some of them. HP, GES, Granite, HALLIBURTON.
And there is update for iphone 3G unlock with yellowsn0w current version 0.9.6 Beta. Since the success rate for unlocking is so high, I am going to test it out.
I also updated my current Japanese learning.
Overall today is fruitful day. I reached my target!
update:
I unlocked my iphone 3g with yellowsn0w version 0.9.6. All work perfectly! I follow the tutorial at iClarified. I need to do a network reset though before I manage to get it to work. And one thing I noticed. After restarting from airplane mode, the signal is weak. But it is fine after a reboot.
Wow, I guess I must be pretty busy for the late update. Well, I was still able to find time to participate in IEEE Photo Scavenger Hunt with my roommate for fun. It was really for fun. If I were to win, a lot of effort will be needed. Here are some of the photos.
Spiderman poster at Upson Hall. This photo is easy to find because I am always around Upson Hall.
A sign with high voltage and high laser. We thought this is easy to find. But they arent many lab with high voltage and high laser. This picture is taken in front of the lab at the Olin Hall corridor.
Duffield during Boom. I happen to be around during Boom to give support to my project team, Cornell Minesweeper.
Picture of Cornell Minesweeper team. Team leader, Vikas standing in the middle. The only girl in my team, Nana also in the middle. Me, on the far left.
Picture of glowing rock inside a display case. Guess where is it? It is inside the Geological Science Building, next to Hollister Hall.
Picture of person wearing shorts around engineering quad. On the right is Chiun Lin.
Picture of me with Tau Beta Pi bent. One day, when I was walking home from my class, a guy approached me and asked me to take a photo of him with the bent. Initially, I didnt suspect anything, but then, when he take out the Cornell Daily Sun, immediately, I knew that he is another scavenger hunt team. After I help him to take the photo, I asked him to take mine as well. He also didnt suspect anything until I asked for his newspaper! LOL. Well, after we got our photo taken, another idea stike my mind. I asked him, "Why dont we take a photo together to fulfill another photo hunt requirement."
Well, here's the picture of me with another scavenger hunt team. I guess both of us most be very surprised of how small this world is.
Last Saturday, I have got nothing to do (yea right...), so I decided to go to the midnight dimsum at Okenshield's with couple of friends. The event started at 10.00pm. But as the usual me, I decided to go 10 minutes earlier to safe some spots. When we reached Okenshield's, we were surprised at how crowded the dining hall was. I guess you dont get free stuff at Cornell often?
People waiting in line for midnight dimsum (FYI, this is outside Williard Strait Hall. You can imagine how long the line was).
Seeing the long line, we decided not to waste time and go to the free ice skating at lynah rink organized by 2008 class council. Since we were there early, the president politely asked us to blow some ballons.
Me blowing some crab literally. Initially, my friend looked relunctant to blow balloons. However after his blowing for sometimes, he seemed to be getting "high". I guess blowing hard will reduce some stress?
My friend, Byron, initially blowing the balloons.
The magical crab on my friend face. (His face looked like a rabbit in this photo. LOL)
Balloons pilling up on the floor.
At about 10:30pm, we could enter the rink already.
Me preparing to enter the skating rink. Nope, I am not nervous. I took ice skating PE class before.
My friend on the other hand, was the first timer.
Byron, clinging to the walk, making his baby steps. Learning to skate.
Me and Benjamin, also first timer. But he is quite a fast learner. Managed to skate after this.
In the middle of skating session, the class council presented us with performance.
Robo dance performance!
Byron, Me, Benjamin (left to right)
Me and Benjamin in the middle of skating rink. I had got to run there by using my camera timer.
At about 12.30am, the event ended. On the way back, we thought, hey, let's go to Okenshield's and see whether the Midnight Dimsum thingy still on. Well, we were lucky.
Benjamin and me at Okenshield's for midnight dimsum. (Byron already went to another party!! So he was not with us.) I used the self-timer to take the above picture. At this time, a beatiful volunteer student asked whether we needed some help taking photos. I thought, hey, why not. We dont always have chance to get our photo taken by a beautiful girl!
Me and Benjamin. The photo was taken by a beatiful young girl. See, Benjamin looking shy already.
After the midnight dimsum, finally we went back satisfied. By the time we reach our dorm, it was already 1.30 am. Well, I went to bed not long after. You know, I will have to work on Sunday!
FYI, last Saturday was CNY. It has been three years since I celebrate chinese new year here at cornell without family members. I must say that I miss the CNY back at my hometown. Below are some pictures of how I celebrated my CNY here:
Eating special CNY dinner at Okenshield's with fellow Malaysians on Thursday.
At fellow Singaporeans friend's house preparing for steambot and BBQ. (on Friday)
Yummy Yummy tomyam seafood (Friday).
Playing poker after reunion dinner on Saturday.
Poker gang.
Arranging poker chip for attacking and defending stance. LOL. See the arrow? My friend is attacking me. I built a war to deflect the attack. Well, in the end, I also lost all my poker chip.
After Saturday, I guess my CNY celebration ended. Come to think of it. It is really absurb. The celebration ended before the CNY. LOL. Well, I got plenty of work to so on Sunday and there is school on Monday. So, I guess the celebration will just have to stop. In Malaysia, we celebrate CNY for nearly a week! Well, can't wait to go back home again to celebrate CNY with families and friends.
