Clive Betts MP (Lab) - Chair 

 

Clive Betts has been Member of Parliament for Sheffield Attercliffe since 1992. Born in Sheffield, Clive received a BA in Economics from Pembroke College, Cambridge. Before entering Parliament Clive worked as an economist for the Trades Union Congress, as Local Government Officer for Derbyshire County Council, and as Local Government Economist for South Yorkshire Council. From 1997 to 2001 he was a Government Whip, and since 2002 he has been a Member of the Department for Communities and Local Government Select Committee. Clive has a strong background in local government having held offices on Sheffield City Council from 1976 to 1992.

Rt. Hon. Nick Raynsford MP (Lab) - Honorary Chair

 

Nick Raynsford has been Member of Parliament for Greenwich since 1992 and for Greenwich and Woolwich since 1997. Nick served as Minister of State for Local and Regional Government from 2001 to 2005 and his achievements include: creation of the Greater London Authority; commissioning and implementing the Egan Report Rethinking Construction; publication of the Quality and Choice Green Paper; publication of the 2001 Local Government White Paper and passage of 2003 Local Government Act. Nick chairs numerous bodies including the Construction Industry Council, the NHBC Foundation, the Open House Supporters Group, and the Fire Protection Association Council. Nick is also regular contributor to various magazines including Building, Roof, and Municipal Journal.

Lord (Richard) Best (C-Bench) - Vice Chair 

 

Lord Best has been Director of both the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust since 1988. He is President of the Local Government Association and was a member of the Minister of Local Government's Sounding Board from 2002-2005 and a member of the Housing Minister's Sounding Board from 1999-2001. He chairs both the Westminster Housing Commission and the Giving Forum, and is President of the Continuing Care Conference. He served as Commissioner of the Rural Development Commission from 1989 to 1998, and as Secretary to the Duke of Edinburgh's Inquiry into British Housing from 1984 to 1991. Between 1973 and 1988 he was Director of the National Federation of Housing Associations. Richard Best was created a Life Peer in 2001.

Robert Syms MP (Con) - Vice Chair 

 

Robert was elected MP for Poole in 1997. In December 1999 he was appointed as Frontbench Spokesman for environment, transport and the regions. In September 2001, he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party. In March 2003, he was also appointed as an Opposition Whip. From November 2003 to July 2007, he served as a Shadow Minister for Local Government. Robert is currently campaigning for a fairer deal for Poole from the Government on funding for local government, National Health Service and the Police.
