A portrait is a collaboration between the subject and artist. The creation of an oil painting begins with discussions with the client to understand the qualities to be embodied in the painting. The client will want to give careful attention to clothing choices and other visual elements to be included. If you want flowers in the painting, please bring a fresh bouquet to the sitting. At the first sitting, i will take a number of photographs and we will discuss which ones best capture the appropriate mood. I will also do some preliminary work on the painting and will make some observations about the lighting and general placement on the canvas. At the second sitting, I will make modifications and add color.

An accurate likeness is important, but it is also critical that the portrait be a beautiful painting, and some artistic interpretation will also be evident. The more you communicate about your desires, the better the result will be. Getting to know you makes the portrait a richer expression of your life.

The fees for an oil painting start at $1,000 for a head and shoulders view. The size varies depending on the client's desires and the artistic impact. Size does not change the pricing. Half of the commission fee is earned and due at the first sitting, with the balance due when the painting is complete. While I accept requests for modifications, the final portrait will be to my satisfaction. If it is also to the client's satisfaction, the second payment is due and we will make arrangements for framing and shipping.  Charges for these services are additional and framing and shipping are at the client's risk, though I am happy to make the arrangements.
