Koenigswinter/Germany

Contemporary Tibetan Art from Lhasa

-an Exhibition in Koenigswinter/Germany

Until the middle of the twentieth century modern art was practically unknown in Tibet - except for a few, isolated beginnings - as Tibetan society was comparatively traditional and isolated. But in recent decades a new, highly independent, even idiosyncratic Tibetan painting style has emerged: Motifs from every-day life are combined with Buddhist themes, oil- and water-color painting, the use of traditional natural pigments, as well as collage techniques are widespread. Works by the artists of the Gendun Choepel Gallery in Lhasa are being presented for the first time in Germany. Gendun Choepel was the first modern Tibetan painter and poet. His free and open mind, his rejection of convention and his wide range of talents have become a source of inspiration and orientation for young Tibetan intellectuals today. In addition, we are showing paintings by two contemporary artists from Lhasa who live in the West.
