Grammar School Course of Study


Kindergarten  

Our study of history will include
Families; Community Helpers; traditions and holidays; geographical landforms and regions; historical figures; inventors;

Our topics for science will be
Observing with our senses; seasons; properties of living and non-living objects; characteristics and classification of leaves, trees, fruits, vegetables, animals (desert and farm).

In literature we will read
Primary Phonics readers and Phonics Museum reader which include a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.

Teacher Read-alouds may include
Many of the classical literature pieces as well as topical material to coincide with science and history.

In language arts we will
We will use Shurley Grammar to learn about and use nouns and verbs; identify sentence rules; compose and classify sentences.

We may read and memorize poetry from
We will memorize and orally present Shurley Grammar jingles and chants.

We will practice all the math skills
We will practice the math skills necessary to build a strong foundation for understanding mathematical operations of addition and subtraction, time, money, geometry, ordinal positions, graphing and place value.

Our exciting field trips may include
Visits from Community Helpers like fire and sheriff; Lombardi Ranch, Autry Museum, Water Resource Center.

In Bible we will read the following books
A selection of Old and New Testament stories to demonstrate the attributes of God like love, faithfulness, patience, etc.

We will memorize
A selection of Old and New Testament verses to demonstrate the attributes of God like love, faithfulness, patience, etc.

Special events and projects may include
Apple tasting and graphing; Hundredth Day Celebration collections and collages, Animal Monart Song Book

Additional Lessons
Experience and practice American Sign Language  to incorporate all modalities of learning into various subjects areas.

PE will be on
Physical Education is a part of every day, to include:  large motor coordination, ball handling skills and learning group games.

1st Grade  

Our study of history will include:
Timelines, Directions, Maps, Globes, Our Heritage, Highlights  from American History (Columbus, Pilgrims), Travel Around the US, Freedom,  Our Flag, Famous Landmarks, Presidents, Historical Figures, Travel Around  the World

Our topics for science will be
Senses, Land/Water Formations, Seasons, Weather,  Matter, Conservation, Sun, Moon & Stars, Living/Nonliving Things,  Machines, Magnets, Plants, Animals 

In literature we will read
The phonics museum primers as well as literature books such as Madeline, Curious George, Nate the Great, Little Bear, and Peter Rabbit.

Teacher Read-alouds may include:
Many picture books (for example: I am Special by Max Lucado, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, and Time Biographies for Kids: Thomas Edison and  Harriet Tubman).

In language arts we will
Study the structure of sentences using nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases.  We will learn how to spell words with one and two vowels, two and three consonant blends, as well as compound words and contractions.

We may read and memorize poetry from
Anne Bradstreet, Shel Silverstien, and Beast Feast.

We will practice all the math skills
Saxon Math 1

Our exciting field trips may include 
Library, Lombardi’s Ranch, William S. Hart Park,  Shambala, Retirement Center, Castaic Water & Power, Autry Museum,  California Science Center

In Bible we will focus on
Creation, Flood, 10 Commandments, OT Major  Characters, The Gospels, Trinity, Jesus (as a boy to our Savior), The  Lord’s Prayer, 12 Disciples, OT & NT Books, Salvation, New Creations

We will memorize
Bible Verses, Grammar Jingles, Famous Quotes,  Science Songs

Special events and projects may include
Travel Passports, Crafts from Around the World,  Heritage Potluck, Weather Journals, US Travel Journals, Letter Writing to  Friends Around the World, Timelines, 3-D Plant Projects

PE will be on
Fridays.

Music, Art, and Physical Education.

2nd Grade  

Our study of history will include:
Early Biblical history and Ancient Egypt

Our study of bible will include:
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua

Our topics for science will be
Animal Classification, Fossils, Health Science, Soil & Rocks, Plants & Photosynthesis, The Water Cycle, States of Matter, Light/Heat/Sound

In literature we will read:
Frog and Toad are Friends, Bedtime for Frances, The Biggest Bear, Blaze and the Lost Quarry, The Little House, Ox-Cart Man, Mummies (Milton), Egypt (Krensky), A Chair for My Mother, The Great Wonder, Tutankhamon’s Gift, The Velveteen Rabbit, Mummies Made in Egypt, Miss Nelson is Missing, Doctor DeSoto, Mummies (Kunhardt),The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Tut’s Mummy Lost...And Found, In Grandma’s Attic, Cleopatra (Stanley)

In grammar we will:
-Classify pattern I sentences (subject noun-verb)
-Integrate Spelling, Phonics, and Writing into our study of Grammar
-Identify singular/plural, synonym/antonym, and common/proper nouns
-Write 2-point expository paragraphs
-Learn to apply punctuation and capitalization rules

We will practice all the math skills
In Saxon Math 2

Our exciting field trips may include: 
The Holyland Exhibition, The King Tut Exhibit (fall 2005 only), Valencia Library, Los Angeles Zoo, Fossil Hunting, Santa Clarita Ballet’s Nutcracker production, Skirball Cultural Center (archaeology dig)

We will memorize:

3rd Grade  

Our study of history will include:
Biblical History, Ancient Greece and Rome

In literature we will read:
Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Homer Price, The Lion, Witch & Wardrobe, Misty of Chincoteague, Pilgrim’s Progress, The Long Winter, Trumpet of the Swan, Adventures of Greek Heroes, and Winnie the Pooh.

Teacher Read-alouds may include:
Horse and His Boy, Courage of Sarah Noble, Sounder, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Indian in the Cupboard.

In language arts we will:
Classify pattern 2 and 3 sentences using Shurley Grammar 3.  Use D’Nealian Cursive.   Write short stories and letters with a beginning, middle, and an end.  Use a dictionary, encyclopedia and thesaurus.

We may read and memorize poetry from
Selected poems about the Trojan War, Olympics, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Aqueducts,

We will study art and architecture
Ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture.

We will practice all the math skills
All the skills in Saxon 3.

Our exciting field trips may include: 
The Getty Museum, Placerita Nature Center, Library

In Bible we will read the following books:
Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1&2 Kings, 1 &2 Chronicles, Nehemiah, Psalms, Proverbs,

We will memorize:
Judges, 21:25, Ruth 1:16, 1 Sam. 16:7, 1 Sam. 17: 45-47, Ps. 18:1-3, Ps. 23, Ps.  51:10-13, Prov. 3: 5-12, Prov. 9:10, Prov. 13:20, Prov. 29:22-23

Special events and projects may include:
Mythology Museum, Roman Forum Feast Day, Hatching chicks in class, Building volcanoes, Making slings.  Puppet shows.

PE will be on
Tuesday and Friday from 1:20 to 1:50 p.m.

4th Grade  

Our study of history will include:
The Renaissance and Reformation


Our topics for science will be
Natural Science

In literature we will read:
Winter of the Red Snow, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Book of Three, Luther the Leader, Number the Stars, The Carpenter of Zerbst, the Beggar’s Bible

Teacher Read-alouds may include:
The Door in the wall, Fair Weather, the Apprentice, Seaman, Escape form Warsaw, South Tetoken

In language arts we will:
Classify Shurley Grammar Pattern 3 and 4 sentences, Learn to write three point expository, three point persuasive, compare and contrast paragraphs

We may read and memorize poetry from
Chaucer and others

We will practice all the math skills
Saxon Math 65

Our exciting field trips may include: 
The Valencia Library, Museum of Science, Medieval Times

In Bible we will read the following books:
Chronicles through Malachi

We will memorize:
The Apostle’s Creed, The Nicene Creed, among others

Special events and projects may include:
A Science Faire, and a Middle Ages Faire

5th Grade  

 Our study of history will include:
The time period from Columbus through the War of 1812

Our topics for science will be
Plant and Animal Identification and Classification, Scientific Experimentation through the Scientific Method

In literature we will read:
Many pieces of literature including The Secret Garden, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Phantom Tollbooth, The Magician’s Nephew and Tuck Everlasting.

Teacher Read-alouds may include:
Animal Farm, Jungle Books, Of Plymouth Plantation and Where the Red Fern Grows

In language arts we will:
Identify parts of speech, classify sentences, and write persuasive and comparison/contrast essays

We may read and memorize poetry from

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, The Book of Virtues

We will practice all the math skills
Saxon Math 6/5

Our exciting field trips may include: 
Ronald Reagan Library, Revolutionary War Reenactment at Riley’s Farm

50 States and Capitals, Preamble to the Constitution, US Presidents, A presentation of the plan of Salvation to share as a witness

Founding Fathers Presentation, Clay Model of Magellan’s Route around the World, 12 Apostles Presentation, 13 Colonies Report and “Tower”, Book Reports

Additional Lessons

6th Grade  

 Our study of history will include:
Slavery in the South, War with Mexico, California Gold Rush, War between the States, Spanish-American War, World War I and II, Space Race, and Modern America

Our topics for science will include
Anatomy, Classification, Scientific Method, and Birds and Trees

In literature we will read:
Tales from Shakespeare, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, Morning Star of the Reformation, A Christmas Carol, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Watership Down, Sherlock Homes Stories, Carry on, Mr. Bowditch, The Hiding Place, and Out of the Silent Planet.

Teacher Read-alouds may include:
Short Stories, War of the Worlds

In language arts we will:
-Classify and diagram five sentence patterns.
-Review and apply more rules of spelling
-Write descriptive narratives with rich vocabulary applying grammar and punctuation rules.
-Edit and revise composition.
-Practice essay writing.

We will practice all the math skills
Saxon 7/6

Our exciting field trips may include: 
Civil War reenactment, Gold Mining Expedition, Nixon Library
