Beginners Guide to Lowrance GPS
So you have your new Lowrance, and promptly shoved the manual in a drawer and are fixing to go outside to fire it up. Great! Although I would suggest reading that manual sometime, you can get started without going through it's long and winding explanations. Let's start with some basic functions, and work up from there.
First Satellite Lock, Initialization.
Take your unit outside, and find a clear view of the sky without obstructions. Don't worry about clouds, as they have little effect on reception. Once you have found a good spot, turn on the unit, and press the PAGES button until you see the satellite info page. Now either set down the unit, or hold it still while it finds the satellites. The antenna is above the screen, and under the GPS logo, so face that up toward the sky, with the unit laying near horizontal, but still having an upward pitch so you can see the screen. Normally this should take only a few minutes, watch the satellite signal strength bars to see if it is finding them well, in some circumstances it could take up to 10 minutes to lock on.
Once you have a lock, press PAGES until you find either the map, or compass page, and run in victory circles around your yard, watching the arrows move and your speed register. Cool isn't it, if you haven't used GPS before you'll find yourself walking up and down the street, checking it against your cars speedometer, and using it on trips you make every day. I know, I've done it too.
Making a Waypoint.
Now that you have a satellite lock, we can create a waypoint. Stand in the spot you want to mark, and press the ENT/ SAVE button. A pop up display asks you how you want to save it. Using the pan (Center button with arrows) key to go down and select "Current Pos", press ENT, and then press ENT again once it snaps to the "Create" button. Now you are in the Waypoint options area. On the bottom is your current selection, and by rocking the pan key you can change the Name, symbol, coordinates, and many other options we wont go into now. Go to "Name and enter in a name, the pan key and ENT are the only two buttons needed to do this, and you can use them to select the fields, and change the name to what you like.
Navigation to a Waypoint.
Press the FIND button. Select "My Waypoints" and find your newly created destination using either the "Nearest" or "Name" options. Select "Go To" on the bottom. Using the map or Compass pages, use the arrow or line, and the distance readout to find your spot.
