Incorporating six massive donated grindstones / pulping stones from the West Linn Paper Company mill, the sculpture will act as an artistic monument, celebrating West Linn's 115-year mill town heritage.  Along with an interpretive panel funded by separate sources, the Grindstones installation will represent a visual chronicle, reflecting the significance of early 20th century industry. The final installation will demonstrate respect for the intrinsic historic value of the grindstones.  Concepts will fully engage the community's imagination, inspire municipal pride, create a visual landmark celebrating the City's unique industrial history, and honor the legacy of the men and women who've worked at our mill since the 1890s.

The Grindstone Project is West Linn's first public art project.  Phase One will include the Design Call, review of submissions, selection of semi-finalists, public input, evaluation of the semi-finalists' presentations and models and the selection of the final design, by mid-July, 2008. Phase Two, fundraising, is anticipated to be completed in 2008 and a contract with the selected artist(s) in place by January, 2009.  Creation and installation of the art work is planned for completion by July 1, 2009, and the project may be a West Linn featured attraction during that summer's Oregon150 celebration.
