Helen Whately and local Conservatives campaigned to Save Our Post Offices
To try and save these valuable local Post Offices we collected signatures for a petition and comments to submit to the Post Office consultation, which was open until 2 April 2007.
Why are did we campaign to save these Post Offices?
| Without these neighbourhood post offices, people will have to travel much further to go to their post office, and the queues in the town centre branches will get even longer. This is especially worrying for older people who are regular users of local post offices. Journeys to town centre post offices and long queues will be particularly difficult for elderly residents who have problems getting about. Post Offices are crucial for local shopping parades and a focus point for communities. Local shopkeepers are very worried about the potential loss of business. These closures take us another step closer to losing precious local shops. Without our local parades we will have to go to town centre shops or out-of-town supermarkets, even just for a newspaper and a pint of milk. | |
The petition and comments have now been submitted by Helen to the Post Office Ltd
Six weeks ago five post offices in the constituency of Kingston and Surbiton received notices of closure, subject to consultation. Helen delivered to the Post Office Ltd;
- over 1600 hundred signatures on petitions
- over 200 letters.
These relate to the five Post Offices earmarked for closure as follows:
| | Signatures on petition | Letters |
| Hook Rise | 60 | 150 |
| Surbiton Park | 375 | 20 |
| Norbiton Common (Kingston Road) | 140 | 16 |
| Burlington Road | 300 | 1 |
| Plough Green | Over 800 | 40 |
| More than one post office | 60 | 0 |
This only adds to the body of evidence collected by the Surrey Comet and others.
The final results of the consultation will be released in May, when we will learn whether we have saved any of our local Post Offices
