Gordon Brown’s Government has backed down on plans to confiscate 5% of Kingston schools’ surplus budget every year for the next three years, in response to widespread outcry about the plans. This move would have cost Kingston schools almost £1 million (£922,432).
While the Conservatives welcome the Government climb-down, the long term pressure for schools to reduce their budget surplus remains. The Government has also left the option open for future raids on prudent schools budgets.
This short term approach from the Government risks the long terms sustainability of our schools in Kingston as it encourages short term spending drives over long term investment to improve our schools for the children of Kingston.
