Gibraltar Bird Breeders Association

A delegation of four members of the Gibraltar Bird Breeders Association (G.B.B.A.) have recently returned from a busy two weeks back to back participation in two bird shows in Spain forming part of the 2010 season.

The first show was held in Puerto Real-Cadiz where the GBBA contingency won a total of 19 Medals. They then traveled to Seville where they participated in the annual International Bird Show held in Dos Hermanas and organized by The Ornithological and Cultural Association “El Canario”.  The GBBA total a total of 18 Medals in Dos Hermanas.

All in all this year is proving to be one of the most successful particularly considering the much reduced number of G.B.B.A. participants. So far the G.B.B.A. participants have jointly won a record total of 16 Gold,  11 silver and 10 Bronze. (See table below).

The Dos Hermanas show attracted 125 participants from Germany, Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Gibraltar and a total of 1200 birds on show. The G.B.B.A. contingent participated with sixty-one birds spread amongst various categories but all ringed with IOA/Com GB closed rings. G.B.B.A. participants where: Maxi Pratts, Peter Sardeña, Louis Spiteri and Manolo Suetta. Special mention goes to Louis Spiteri our veteran president for his outstanding achievement in both shows.

Overview.

This season is seeing a significant downturn in participants in some of the major bird shows in Spain this mainly due to the disputes and bad feeling amongst the Spanish local associations and national federations and their internal politics and ramblings, which is clearly affecting the participant’s turnout.

Despite this the G.B.B.A. participants continue to be loyal to their cause and lead the way by setting high standards and continue developing our relationship by participating further afield in bird shows which respect and support our status and independence as a British participant with IOA/COM GB closed rings.

Some of our members are now planning to attend one of the highest ranked European Shows held annually in Reggio Emilia –Italy later this month before preparing their birds for the coming World Show in January 2011 in Tours, France.

G.B.B.A. members are reminded that if you wish to participate in any show the association offers free registration, delivery and collection services for all paid up members whose birds are ringed with G.B.B.A. approved and issued 2010 closed rings.
