TEAM UK ARRIVE IN SPAIN

Who ever said that being the President of the I.O.A. & C.O.M. UK was a glamerous position to hold?

I.O.A. & C.O.M. UK Conveyors to the World Show , Richard Lumley & Gary Mann with E.O.A. conveyor Peter Sherlock.

Richard is the one auditioning for the role of Trigger if there is a remake of Only Fools and Horses

The I.O.A. are pleased to welcome Gary Mann to their COM / OMJ Judges panel after he sat and passed his entrance exam in Holland on the 4th January 2012. Gary becomes the ninth   I.O.A. member elected to the World Order Judges ( OMJ) panel and is now eligable to Judge Section E , Posture Canaries - Smooth Feather , at International & World level. This caps a remarkable year for Gary who was elected onto the Committe of C.O.M. UK, acted as conveyor to the World Show and has won many Internmational C.O.M. medals with his birds.

As 2011 comes to a close the I.O.A. can look back on another successful year, both here at home and on the show benches of Europe. Over 300  birds where conveyed to shows in France & Belgium returning with 46 medals , testament to the skill of U.K. breeders and the dedication of the conveyors , indeed the newly formed COM UK have entrusted the UK Team for the upcoming World Show in Spain to IOA conveyors Gary Mann & IOA , COM UK President , Richard Lumley. Friendships have been forged with our Continental neighbours and the Committee are constantly looking for shows to add to the calander so that members can experience the thrill of exhibiting at the largest shows in Europe. Richard goes on to say " We took 188 birds to the Golden Ring Show this year , numbers grow wih each year and next year we hope for 250 or more , we are becoming 'serious players' on the Continental Show scene and the subsidy awarded by the IOA makes it an affordable & enjoyable  weekend for the members. We take care of everything , entry forms ,  collecting the birds and taking them to Belgium and we even organise the coach trip , the members can just turn up and enjoy the show , after all this is what the IOA do best . Order your IOA rings , breed a stormer or two and leave the rest to the IOA , on behalf of the Committee I wish all our members a merry christmas and a happy new year".

The Constitution was approved and the following officers were elected; Richard Lumley (president), Chris Smith & Simon Tammam (vice presidents), Ghalib Al-Nasser (secretary), Brian Preddy (treasurer) and Gary Mann & Andrew Triolo (committee members). Other non Executive posts were also filled and they are as follows: Blanche Preddy (sponsorship advisor), Ghalib Al-Nasser (publicity & webmaster); Grant Findlay (auditor); Gary Mann (World Show Co-ordinator); Gary Mann & Richard Lumley (World Show Conveyors); Simon Tammam (COM-UK OMJ Coordinator), Ghalib Al-Nasser & Simon Tammam COM-UK Technical Committee, Andrew Triolo (Art Co-ordinator).

All current COM-OMJ judges who are on the listing of either IOA or NCA will now be transferred to the new Federation COM – UK listing and all future communications and renewal of judges’ fees are to be conducted through the COM-UK secretary. Judges who would like to elevate themselves to become COM-OMJ judges will need to apply to the secretary by 30th May for their names to be put forward to COM-OMJ so that they can sit written & practical tests. Aspiring judges will need to acquaint themselves with judging on the continental points system. It was also agreed to set the COM-UK judges’ criteria as follows:

a.       Must be a national judge for a minimum of five years and competent in the section that he/she is applying for.
b.      Needs to be familiar with the COM-OMJ points system of judging.

LCA,  NBFA & ZFS are acceptable by COM-UK and COM.

COM operates a 6-year ring colour cycle and all birds shown at the World and international shows will have to adhere to that colour sequence which is: 2011 dark blue, 2012 red, 2013 black, 2014 pastel green, 2015 violet and 2016 orange.

It is hoped that a website for the new Federation will be launched next month and any sponsorship donations will need to be made to COM-UK and sent to the secretary.

2011 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The 2011 AGM was another well attended meeting.
The membership heard through the officers reports that the past year had been one of the best in the history of the IOA.Membership/Ring sales were at a all time record with now over 50% of IOA members ringing their birds with ID Coded rings. The selling of carpohyll red to members was a huge success with 20 kilo been sold in the first year. The IOA’s first ever venture into running a coach trip to the Gouden Ring Show in Belgium was again a  huge success and another one is planned for 2011 for the members.
Several revisions of the rule book were adopted by the membership and a new rule book is currently in production. The President thanked the out going President Mr Paul Brockman for all his work for the IOA and welcomed the new members onto the committee. The formation of the Federation for the COM-UK was discussed and the members were told in full all the facts as to why it would have to be voted on whether to go ahead with it or not,a question was raised by one member that we had not asked the members about this and we were breaking our rules,it was pointed out to the member that we had asked all paid up 2010/11 members in the  spring news letter under the Presidents Address and that some members who could not attend this agm had put in a postal vote which was their right,so after a vote by members in the meeting everybody voted YES one member abstained from the vote,in total not one member had voted NO.A meeting would now be arranged by the sub committee of the IOA with the committee of the NCA.We already have a draft constitution which has been supplied by COM for both parties to work to,Members were reminded that the COM-UK was only for the World Show and the other COM shows which the IOA will be going to would be run by TEAM GB.

The IOA at the Bague d'Or (Golden Ring Show )

Whilst the rest of Great Britain shivered to a halt with some of the worst weather we have witnessed in over thirty years the I.O.A. machine swung into action to get Team GB to Roeselare . With many predicting we wouldn't make it ( and some willing us to fail ) the I.O.A. did what it does best and got the birds to the show , intact and on time . Credit must go to Golden Ring co-ordinator & conveyor Richard Lumley and the regional conveyors , Paul Brockman , Alan Robinson & Willy McKay . The effort was to prove worthwhile as Team GB , sponsored by Supapets , went on to record a fantastic medal haul.

First time continental  exhibitors , Fred Johns, Sean Fitzpatrick & Don Footitt lead the way with Gold Medals , Fred with his stam (team of four ) Fifes , Sean gaining his Gold with a cinnamon greenfinch and Don' s Gold coming by way of his greenfinch, Fred and Don also took a Bronze medal with their respective breeds. Tony Hutchinson added a Gold to the list with his red agate cobalt colour canary ,  two shows , two golds with two different birds means Tony's European campaign is of to a flying start.

Les Summers , now the most 'capped' canary exhibitor in Team GB , added to his impressive medal list with two Golds , two Silvers and a Bronze by way of his Irish Fancy canaries. With a Gold and two Bronze for Ian Wrights glosters we had reached the dizzy hieghts of 14 medals . More were to come our way. David Allen secured two Silvers , one for a Gold Lizard and one for a whiteground Lizard , Ricahrd Lumleys hard work was repaid with a Silver Medal with his glosters and completing the medal haul was the Bronze awarded to Paul Brockman's Hoso Posture canary.

Aother resounding success was the I.O.A.'s innaugural coach trip , although some of those who had booked seats were 'defeated' by the weather , twenty six members braved the elements and were treated to a 'four star' experience. The I.O.A. would like to thank our tour operator , Wilfreda Beehive , for the excellent service we received. From our driver Craig , who couldn't do enough to help , our luxury coach (barely two months old ) to the superb four star Hotel Ariane ---the only complaint is  that we have to wait twelve months to repeat the experience .

Showing and visiting the top European Shows is bought to you by The Team You Can Trust.

COM INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF COLOURS , NORMANDY , FRANCE

Despite the parking lot we call the M1 and the M25 , striking french workers and a worrying lack of diesel in France , the IOA Convoyage got the birds to the COM International Festival of Colours in tact ( even if an hour and a half late ). The convoyage this year was myself , Neville Gaunt and my travelling buddy Andy Early . It proved to be well worth the effort and Team GB secured 23 Gold , 9 Silver and 6 Bronze medals.

Dave Allen , Lizard canary , 1 Gold 1 Bronze
Paul Brockman , Hoso canary , 3 Gold , 3 Silver , 1 Bronze.
Joe Coakley , Lizard canary , 1 Gold , 1 Bronze

NEWS FROM THE COMMITTEE MEETING 16/10/10 ---WORLD SHOW COACH TRIP CANCELLED.

At the meeting held on the 16/10/10 delegates informed the Committee that we still have no communication from the New French COM regarding the proposed World Show in Tours in January.

5 letters have been sent and to date no reply has been received , traditionally the organising country inform all participating countries of the details at the end of September , without confirmation , coupled with the fact that only 13 members had expressed an interest in the World Show Coach trip , the Committee was unable to commit the Association to the trip at a cost of £6,000+ .All deposits will be returned and the Committee  are saddened to have been forced to make this decision but to commit the Association to a £6,000 bill without confirmation would have been foolhardy.

For what ever reason the coach trip to Tours failed to excite the membership ,( it could be that many will make their own arrangements, given that the Show might be held so close to our shores ) however the same can not be said of the coach trip to the Golden Ring show .The Golden Ring trip can only be described as a fantastic  success with all seats nearly sold out ( for the few remaining places on this trip contact Alan Robinson )  , the IOA will have a stand at the Golden Ring where you can renew membership , order rings and carophyll or simply stop by to have a chat. Our General Secretary will shortly be contacting all those going on this trip to arrange pick up points , and if you want to enter birds don't forget to contact Richard Lumley for a schedule and entry form.

2010 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The 2010 AGM saw yet another show added to our ever expanding calender , with the Vvnk Colour Canary Show , Mechelen , Belgium ,  being confirmed as an official IOA event.

The meeting began with a tinge of sadness as former General Secretary , Malcolm Neale , was forced to tender his resignation due to personal and health reasons , an extremly well attended AGM saw the membership thank Malcolm for the professional and diligent way he had gone about his duties , Malcolm will remain a member of the Assocaition and support its ideals and objectives and we wish him a speedy return to normality.  Alan Robison, was nominated for and accepted the office of General Secretary , stepping down from the posistion of Vice President , Neville Gaunt was elected to fill the vacant Vice Presidency .

The membership heard ,  through the officers reports , that the Association is in a very healthy financial position , membership continues to increase as does affiliation by close ringing associations and societies , the sale of close rings is at a record level and we had the  most successful year of our history on the show bench.

President, Paul Brockman , outlined his hopes for the coming year saying " I'm delighted that the IOA has become more open and transparent and above all has returned to its roots of sending birds to contest the major European exhibitions. Although it was on my wish list for last year that we form a British Bird Technical Sub Committee it didn't materialise , however this year I have approached a couple of well respected and knowlegable British Bird Breeders who have agreed to help us in this field . Our new General Secretary , Alan Robinson , has already established a good working relationship with Defra and Natural England and it is envisaged that this new Sub Committee can continue to represent the Association at Governmental level. Once ratified by the Committee I shall make an announcement . "

Several revisions to the rule book were adopted by the membership and a new rule book is currently in production and will be sent to all paid up members in due course , these revisions continue  the theme of making the IOA a more democratic and member driven association in that all major decisions that affect the core principles of the IOA will be made by the entire membership through a full postal ballott. The President thanked the outgoing committee for discharging their duties in a diligent manner and welcomed the new Committe to Office and although there will be some difficult issues to deal with this coming year he was upbeat about the Associations future predicting an exciting year for IOA members. The IOA has been approached by a major European supplier of supplements and organic remedies for birds , to become its UK agent , talks are ongoing but if agreement is reached we hope to be able to offer members some very advantagious prices . This is but one of the many exciting developements that the IOA are investigating so as they say 'Watch this Space' for future announcements .

30/10/09

The International Festival of Colours , Cantelue , Normandy , France

The IOA COM GB entered a team of 42 canaries into this event which is rapidly becoming a 'must not miss' event on the European exhibition circuit . With nearly 3,000 birds on view the International Festival of Colours is more than just an exhibition , it is an event that involves the whole community . One unique part is the parties of local school children who are shown around on the Friday afternoon with members of the AON each taking a small group and introducing them to the different types of birds , also on the Friday afternoon local senior citizens are honoured and the event was opened by the deputy Mayor of Cantelue .

Top Italian Colour Canary Champion , Roberto Scuratti had several hundred Mosaic canaries for sale and exotics were on offer from De Gouldamandine of Belgium , Orinphama , Versa Laga and Varma of Belgium completed the trade stands .

14/07/09

Contact has been made with the organisers of the Golden Ring Show who look forward to the participation of the IOA COM GB members , details will be released in September . Ever mindfull of the welfare of our birds the IOA comittee are currently negotiating for new travel boxes to be manufactured , having seen a sample of the proposed boxes the committee where extremely impressed with the quality offered. Although this will represent a considerable investment on behalf of the membership , peace of mind whilst the birds are away at shows is priceless.

A new page has been added to the website that charts the history of the COM and the IOA , it makes for interesting reading and reinforces Great Britains commitment to International Bird Associations  since 1925.

26/06/09

09/05/09

2009 Annual General Meeting

One of the best attended AGM's for many a year began by observing a minutes silence for our recently departed President , Ron Evans Ron Evans (RIP) , who many credit as being the best President the IOA has had in living history . Many ways of remembering Ron's contribution were disscussed and it was not until the Affiliation of Sandwell Avicutural Society to the IOA was ratified that a solution was hit upon. Sandwell Avicutural Society was a club dear to Ron's heart and it was agreed that the IOA would approach thier Committee with the suggestion that we present a perpetual trophy to them in Ron Evans name so that his memory may live on in an area where he was so well known.

Newly elected President , Paul Brockman , recognised and thanked many of the newly affiliated Societies who have driven up the membership of the IOA and expressed his hope that with increased membership the IOA would continue to send more birds to be exhibited at shows on the Continent as well as supporting more traditional shows here in the UK. With a new Committee in place many fresh and exciting ideas where explored and the IOA Conveyors will be taking birds not only to the World Show in Portugal but also to the Golden Ring in Belgium  and the International Festival of Colour in France, giving those  IOA members who can not make the World Show  the opportunity to experience exhibiting on the Continent.

With more British Bird breeders being elected to the Committee it is hoped that a technical working party will be formed to formulate show standards for some of the newer mutations that in turn can be presented to the COM for adoption ,  cementing the United Kingdom and the IOA once again at the forefront of avicutural policy making.

The Greatest Show on Earth.

You'd be forgiven for reading the headline and expecting to see an article on the 1952 film of that name , directed by Cecil B. DeMille  , starring Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde & Charlton Heston and telling the tale of Circus life. The Show  in question is not held in a Big Top in Mid-West America , but  in  the Quartiere Fieristico di Piacenza (Exhibition Center of Piacenza) and is of course the 57th World Ornithology Championships or The World Show .

The Northern Italian Town of Piacenza, capitol of the province of Piacenza , saw its population of 104, 000 grow by many thousands as exhibitors from across Europe decended on the small town , in the heart of the mountainous region of Italy ,  as it played host to the biggest gathering of bird men & women in mainland Europe.

3215 exhibitors from 20 Nations entered 27,964 birds , a record in World Show history , so great was the entry that the FOI ,(Federazione Ornicoltori Italiani )  had to draft in  106 OMJ  Judges to complete the judging in the alloted  3 days .
