With another World Show over - Congratulations to this years double gold medal winner Bernard Howlett with his Song Thrush's , staged to perfection and in eye catching condition , to win one gold medal at the Worlds most prestigious avicutural exhibition is an achievement , to win two is outstanding .What is even more outstanding is that Bernards show team went on to add a Silver and a Bronze to his tally making him the most successful UK entrant in living history.
Frank Carter staged an Opal Java Sparrow to win Silver and the UK & Ireland showed it leads the way in the Irish Fancy Canary section with Cliff Griffin taking the Silver medal and Les Summers the Bronze. John Doyle representing Ireland COM took Gold in the individuals and Maurice O'Conner , Ireland COM , Gold and Silver in the Stams (a matched team of four) .
Steven Williams , in his first ever World Championship , scored 92 points with his Crossbill Bullfinch Hybrid to be awarded a Bronze Medal narrowly beating his good friend , Jim Clark ( another first year entrant ) who scored 91 points in the same class.

Whilst all sections of the British Bird & UK Canary Fancy are represented there is still little support from British Budgerigar , Parrotlike or Foreign Bird breeders , although the rest of Europe enter these birds in vast numbers , the IOA would urge breeders of these varieties to join Team GB for 2010 .
The numbers of birds entered by each nation were as follows: Austria 276, Belgium 1610, Bulgaria 25 , Cyprus 18, France 1526, Germany 888, Great Britain 168, Greece 122, Holland 1320, Hungary 50, Italy 17,119, Ireland 32 , Malta 58,Poland 12, Portugal 773, Spain 2958, Slovenia 108, Slovakia 40 , Switzerland 486, Czech Republic 105. A total of 3,215 exhibitors from 20 Nations entered a record breaking 27,694 birds. The partition of the medals was as follows:
Italy :-- 463 Gold, 397 Silver, 390 Bronze , Belgium :- 88 Gold, 65 Silver , 54 Bronze ,Holland:- 61 Gold , 52 Silver , 34 Bronze , Spain :- 44 Gold , 54 Silver , 44 Bronze , France :- 41 Gold , 46 Silver, 32 Bronze Germany :-29 Gold , 25 Silver , 22 Bronze , Portugal :- 17 Gold , 15 Silver, 9 Bronze . Austria:- 18 Gold, 6 Silver , 13 Bronze , Switzerland:- 17 Gold , 6 Silver , 13 Bronze ,
Czech Republic:- 5 Gold Silver , 8 Silver 6 Bronze , Great Britain:- 2 Gold, 3 Silver , 3 Bronze , Hungary :- 2 Gold , 2 Silver , 1 Bronze , Solvinia :- 2 Golds , 2 Bronze, Ireland :- 2 Golds , 1 Silver , Slovakia :- 1 Silver , 1 Bronze. This is a total of 792 Golds , 681 Silver , 624 Bronze.
Although at first glance it may appear that Great Britain did not fair to well it must be remembered that our entry of 168 birds represents just 0.6 % of the entire show whilsts Italy had 61.8% and that is reflected in the medal haul . With just 26 UK exhibitors , which included three of our close friends from Gibraltar showing along side us , our medal tally is a record in the modern day history of this competition. Away from the competative side of the show , IOA Members Brian Hogg & Kevin McCullam successfully completed their OMJ entrants exam and now join the ranks of World Judges
Well done Great Britain, this is the way forward and with the quality we have there is no reason why we should not bring home a lot more medals in the future. We will need our top breeders to abandon the taboo of close ringing, and ring at least some of their birds with lOA or affiliated societies rings.
The Association presented all participating members at this world show with a special edition of the distinctive IOA badge , struck with a gold background as opposed to the normal silver , to commemorate their taking part in this prestigious event.
The lOA looks forward to taking many more birds to participate in the next World Show.
