ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

I was born and raised in the Northeast of England, which means I am a Geordie lass (howway the lads for all you Geordie's out there).

Artist Statement:   My drive to create is based purely on a need to satisfy a way to visualize something that has moved me in some way. I regard myself as an Interstitial artist, which is described by the Interestial Arts Foundation as  "art made in the interstices between genres and categories. Art that flourishes in the borderlands between disciplines, mediums, cultures. Art that blurs the divide between fine art and craft, high art and low. Art that crosses boundaries."

Process: Form is dictated by the content, and once I have a basic concept or idea then the images/objects and media are sublimated to that.  It is always an intellectual, emotional, technical journey, but the common thread is that I always like to use black as my base whether I am painting on wood, stone or canvas.  Sometimes I am moved to cut or sand a painting down, or add other elements, or reformat it, but it is always the content that dictates what will happen to a piece.

Education:   I was exposed to art at an early age by my mother, who is an artist herself.  She engaged me in art projects and visits to the museums of the Northeast and London. While I have always been creative and enjoyed crafts, sewing and embroidery, it wasn't until the age of 40 that I took my first formal oil painting class.   I studied under Marie Linnekin at Ann Arundel Community college MD and as a member of her monthly art critique group from 1995 until 1999.
