Karen Day-Vath is a self taught artist working in oil and acrylic. She was born and brought up in Manhattan and then moved to Staten Island, NY where she resided for many years prior to moving to Vermont.
Having been in the restaurant business in NYC she gained a love of jazz from visiting the various jazz clubs in Greenwich Village. Many of her earlier expressionistic abstracts reflect the music scene and memories of the New York City nightlife.
Along with exhibiting her work in different venues she also exhibits her work every year at the Champlain Valley Exposition Art Show at the Blue Ribbon Pavilion in Essex. In 2007 she tied for third place in oil painting with her rendition of "All That Jazz" oil on canvas. In 2009 she won two honorable mentions one for "Blue Grotto" and anothor for an acrylic called "Dreamcatcher", which was sold during the exhibition. More recently in 2011, she took second place in mixed media, for "Liquid Gold" .
In December of 2010, her paintings "All that Jazz" and "Let's Jam" were chosen by Vermont Public Radio to be reproduced on their "Artist Mug" for the February 2011 membership drive.
She states, “My work is more expressionism than anything else. I like the creativity of experimentation and the freedom of expression that I feel when I paint and as the paint goes on the canvas it begins to come together".
She is mesmerized by impressionistic works, especially those of Monet and Van Gogh and recently has added Cezanne to the list.
Karen has also done two step/by/step presentations for About.com a web based painting forum of which she has been a long standing member. Her latest contribution to the forum in December 2011 was the mixed media painting project she did on Liquid Gold .
She is an arts advocate and works closely with the community and others in helping to present exhibits in various venues for her fellow artists. Her latest work is on display at the Village Frame Shoppe & Art Gallery in St. Albans. She is also showing her work at Chow!Bella a fine dining restaurant in the town where she resides. She is a member of the the Northern Vermont Artist Association, Milton Artists Guild, the World Wide Women Artists, and has been on the executive board of the Saint Albans Artists' Guild for 4 years.
