Language Arts

Language Arts consists of Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Grammar.   We will read a variety of books.  Some will tie into our study of American History.  We will write almost every day, often in the form of "Quick Writes".  We will cover many different writing styles.  Spelling units are completed at your own pace; we have a weekly Spelling test.  We also cover grammar through the use of a text book.  One of my favorite units is a unit on Poetry.  All 5th Graders become excellent poets!

 

Math

The development of fundamental math skills are emphasized in 5th Grade.  We cover addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.  We also cover geometry, measurement, probability, graphing, ratios, and percent.  Students are expected to be able to complete 50 multiplication facts in two minutes, and we will have frequent facts test to help every student reach this goal.  Rapid recall of math facts in higher levels of math is essential.

 

Social Studies

Social Studies emphasizes American History from the early explorers through the 1900s.  We also review the geography and land forms of our country.  Students will have several Social Studies projects throughout the year. 

 

Science

Science is divided into four sections, Earth Science, Life Science. Physical Science, and The Human Body.  The heart and lung dissections are always a favorite in 5th Grade Science. 

 

French

Students in 5th Grade will continue their study of French. 

 

Related Arts

Related Arts include Art, Computer, Music and Physical Education.
