PGCE Pre-Service Creativity Project
Rationale
My name is Mrs Aliya Tariq. I completed my PGCE pre-Service course in September 2007. I created the content on this site as a part of my creativity project in the Advanced Professional Practice module.
At the time, I was working with 14-19 year old learners in Key skills. As a part of their qualification, learners had to demonstrate their ICT skills by doing a presentation.
After examining different aspects of teaching practice and learners' evolved New Millennial learning styles, I decided to work on an e-portfolio. An e-portfolio is a record of eletronic material used by candidates to demonstrate their competency in a certain area of learning. I wanted to undertake this project to help teachers realise that an e-portfolio could be an alternative to paper based Portfolio. In order to make a Portfolio, QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority) has laid down some criteria for learners.
To demonstrate an interactive activity for ICT and Communication Key skills, I decided to use criteria "C1.1" (Take part in either a one-to-one discussion or a group discussion). In normal practice learners were asked to take part in a group discussion and a teacher gave feedback on their performance. The teacher assessed each group in turns.
It seemed like a long and a tedious process. I suggested to the teacher to use a digital camera and record learners' group discussion. I informed her that this would allow her to capture the evidence and give her a chance to re-assess a group. I also suggested that she should encourage learners to do a self assessment or peer assessment of their group discussion. She was very positive about the idea.
From my next part of the project, I made Flash movies based on assessment criteria ICT1.3.1 (use appropriate layouts for presenting information in a consistent way) from ICT Key skills. An example paper-based portfolio which was designed using similar criteria can be found here on QCA website .
In the paper based the student had to write a report about an equipment, format the picture and font in his written composition. I used Wink to demonstrate same skills and achieve similar results using ICT (Information and Communication Technology). In addition to this there was no paper wasted, it is accessible anywhere (with an Internet access) and meets the needs of new digital learners; who are used to on-line learning style.
I hope you find this project useful since it has a huge potential for learning and teaching students in an innovative style.
