What is Life Coaching?
"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Life coaching is coaching to improve someone's personal or professional life.
It involves a professional partnership between a coach and the client that supports the client's personal growth, through the use of requests and powerful questions from the coach and commitment and responsibility of the client. Through the process of coaching, clients focus on the skills and actions needed to successfully produce their personally relevant results. Life coaching may include physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the client's life." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_coach
Is coaching a substitution for psychotherapy?
No. Coaching is not a substitution for therapy, medical advice or any other kind of professional consulting. Coaching is great to be used in conjunction with these services, but it is generally assumed the client has a general knowledge about the areas in life s/he wants to change, it is the coaches job to help the client meet their goals.
Why is coaching becoming so popular?
Who hires coaches?
What is the focus of coaching?
Does the coach work on personal goals or professional goals?
How does eCoaching differ from traditional coaching?
eCoaching is less expensive and more convenient than traditional coaching. The downside is that there is less of a bond built between the Coach and Client because there is no face-to-face meetings.
Are Life Coaches certified? Are you certified?
Life Coaches can become certified or credentialed, but there are no certification regulations placed on Life Coaches. This results in many professional schools advertising crash courses in Life Coaching as a kind of get-rich-quick scheme targeting people who want to work at home, set their own hours and make $100 an hour in the process, and when the course is over the 'student' gets a piece of paper proclaiming them a Life Coach. This of course is a load of BS, and is primarily the reason I have chosen to go into Life Coaching uncertified, relying on my college education and personal expertise.
Issues reguarding confidentiality
The coaching process is 100% confidential. Testimonials may be asked of clients but nothing will be used without permission.
What ethical standards do coaches hold?
Can't speak for the rest of the Life Coaches out there, but I vow to hold my Life Coaching practice to the same high ethical standards that are outlined in the American Psychological Association. (The APA is not affiliated with Life Coaching, but their standard of ethics are appropriate for any counseling, coaching or therapy.)
