RICHARD (DICK) SEARS EARNS ‘CURLY ROOSE’ AWARD.
At the Albuquerque Convention, your friend and mine, Richard Sears was awarded the ‘Curly Roose’ Award. This award is presented each year to an Optimist who has displayed outstanding leadership qualities during the preceding year, and is chosen by the previous winners. Dick has met that criterion and then some; and he’s certainly not through yet. Your humble correspondent has the honor of being married to District 19’s Governor Designate, and Dick along with Susan Sears has been invaluable in helping us get our act together. Of course, Robbie was not the first Optimist Dick has mentored, and will, without a doubt, not be the last. Dick belonged to the Cielo Vista Optimist Club during the year of this reporter’s presidency and serve as the Foundation chairman, but nothing else. Of course I didn’t know then what I know now or he would have been a lot busier. Optimism is in his genes!
Dick was born May 19, 1959 in Fort Worth to Betty and Pete Sears. He came to El Paso in 1968, and attended McArthur School from 4th to 8th grade. He graduated from Burges High School in 1977. He attended Midwestern State in Wichita Falls for a year, and then transferred to UTEP. While there he met Susan and they were married in December 1979.They have three children, Jacque, Cory and Stacey and four grandchildren Keira, Charles, Isla and Aria.
He became a Lieutenant Governor in 1991, and served as District Secretary/Treasurer with the Jimmy Angelos team during 1992/93. He, along with Lud Bezemek and Jim Angelos became Builders of Excellence for their efforts in building the Ruidoso Club in September of 1992. He was the NM/WT District Governor during the 1994/95 fiscal year, and continues to serve the district in Leadership Development, as District Conference Chair, OI Foundation and Supply chair. For many years he served as a new club field representative for Optimist International.
Dick owns his own company which supplies promotional products to other businesses and organizations. He is a member of St. Paul’s UMC where he has served as Sunday School superintendent, worship song leader and Lay Leader. He is also on the board of the Homegrown El Paso organization which promotes local businesses. Outside of church, family and Optimism, his primary passion is singing.
