Nano-Optic Devices has developed the core technology for high power laser diodes to increase brightness and power of laser beams.
In industrial processing and pumping applications broad area laser diodes (BALD) are used for its power and high electrical-to-light conversion efficiencies. See the table below.
BALDs suffer from multi-mode oscillation, resulting in a reduction of brightness. To resolve this problem the diode pumped solid state or fiber lasers are used to act as an efficient "mode converter", turning 50-70% of the light from BALD's into a beam capable of welding steel. Such systems are large and costly.
Digital planar hologram technology demonstrated the potential for BALD to operate in a single spatial mode. It offers a path to combine multiple emitter bars into the 500W diffraction limited beam.
