People often think that turtles are easy to care for and those baby-turtles are soooo cute. Please consider the following before you take a turtle or tortoise into your home:
-They live a long time, some can live to be seventy years or older-
-the sale of baby turtles is illegal(with exceptions) so instead of rewarding the seller with your money you should report the person-
-baby turtles are not easy to raise and need special foods and a good set-up with ultraviolet lights, heatlamps, filters for waterturtles, etc.that can easely cost you several hundred dollars-
-turtles and tortoises can get sick just like anybody else, will you be able and prepared to get it to a vet experienced with these animals?-
-a lot of turtles and tortoises in the pettrade are wildcaught which means that they are stressed, traumatized and have parasites and will need medical intervention;do you want to take on the costs for that?-
-If,after doing your research, you do want to get a chelonian, get a CAPTIVE BRED one, they are usually healthy and used to people and captivity and you can check out where it comes from and maybe get info and feedback from the breeder-
Check out http://turtletimes.com or http://www.tortoise.org and do research about the kind of turtle you are thinking about to see if it would fit into your lifestyle and home.
