BRIAN BALDWIN  2007

74cm x 79cm  Pathway with trees.

I paint and live in Highgate, North london. I paint in oils on canvas. I also use pastels on paper. My subjects are landscapes in a style that I have been developing for several years which is like Fauve paintings. My paintings are tonal, and I use strong colours. I  work out the composition on paper sketching out my ideas and then I transfer them onto the canvas drawing outlines with paint.  Once I am satisfied with the composition I then block in the colours and build up the painting until I am satisfied. The size I am working on at present is 29"x31" and 30"x28". I make my own canvases. I use a palette of 10 colours including white.

I have removed myself from realism in my painting in its broadest sense in order to transform nature in paint. Working away from the subject gives me the freedom to express myself and not to be dictated by nature itself.

It takes six months for the paint to dry then I can put on the final varnish on.

Only two of these paintings, Pathway with trees and Autumn trees have their final coat of varnish on. The rest will have their varnish on in October 07.
