Congratulations, Burma!
by Devon on

Due to the overwhelming over-population of cats, finding them good quality homes is a difficult task. We are ecstatic to announce that Burma, a beautiful medium coat black cat who has been here for a few months, has found a wonderful new family of his own. A big thanks to Tina, his foster mom, who helped him on his journey!

Our family has been rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing small domestic and exotic animals  such as reptiles, amphibians, rabbits, rodents, and birds for more than 10 years. Cats and dogs are taken in on a case to case basis, but as we can only house a couple at  a timeat our facility, we depend on foster families to house them while in our care. The animals at 'The McDonald Family Animal Rescue' end up here after their prior owners, for whatever reason, can no longer care for them, while others are abandoned or rescued from neglect or abuse.

We are a smalll, family run organization that recently became a provincially registered charity (#322490). We are supported primarily by our own personal incomes, and the occasional donation from outside sources. We have received a few very generous donations of supplies in the past, which we are extremely grateful for, and if it wasn't for the donations of cages and accessories, we wouldn't be able to do quite as much as we do now. We also have a few extremely loving, dedicated foster homes. Now that we have obtained our Charitable Status, we will be able to embark on larger fundraising campaigns,  and more easily access benefits from companies and corporations, government grants, etc. Once we achieve federal registration, we'll be able to issue tax reciepts. The opportunities presented to us are many and 2008 is shaping up to be a very exciting and pivotol year in the development of 'The McDonald Family Animal Rescue Association'.

Our Goals:

  • To Rescue and Rehome animals that have been neglected, abused, abandoned or unwanted.
  • To provide loving care and veterinary treatment to any animals in need within our care.
  • To educate the public on animal welfare and husbandry by providing information and hands-on experience to schools, etc.
  • To develop a strong organization capable of expanding and providing our services at a larger capacity.

Due to the fact that we have limited funding and space, we have to turn away far too many animals, and it breaks our hearts. We hope to one day be able to accept more of these animals, who so desperately need us and to become an actual sanctuary.  Our long term goal is to expand our rescue to a large expanse of land so that we can rescue larger domestic and exotic animals, primarily farm animals and livestock that would otherwise just be sent to slaughter. We long to give animals like this the chance to live out thei rest of their lives in comfort, surrounded by those that love them.

After a lot of thought, and with a heavy heart, The McDonald Family is forced to reduce our level of operation until the summer of 2008.  We are in the position where we must renovate and expand.  We realize that we can not continue at full capacity and get our work done.  There are not enough hours in the day.  We will no longer be accepting surrenders, baby-sitting exotics, or helping people with their animal related problems because we simply do not have the time to do so.

We will not be returning phone calls or emails unless they are related to animals we already have in our care, animals that you have adopted from us, donations, volunteering, or fundraising.

We will still be providing sanctuary to all of our permanent residents, as well as our adoptable animals until they can find permanent homes.

We will also continue to take in ABSOLUTE EMERGENCIES on a case to case basis. Please keep an eye on  our 'Current Rescued Animals in Need' page as well as our 'Adoptable Animal' Page! Although we are not operating as usual, we are still very busy!

During this time we will be renovating the physical structure of the rescue, and will re-open bigger and better then ever before. WE ARE NOT CLOSING DOWN! As of March 2008 we are a registered Charity, and will also use this time to fundraise for our renovations, and to develop a fund for large, expensive emergency vet bills that will also allow us to spay and neuter more dogs, cats, and rabbits prior to adoption.

This was a difficult decision, but it is the only way that we can improve our rescue operation, and it will benefit the animals in the end.

Thank you for your understanding.

We are now an official charity!
