ANIMAL WELFARE ALERTS

Well, they're not exactly weasels, but don't tell them that! Cash, Presley, O'Malley and Zeus are actually four wonderful ferrets who call The McDonald Rescue home! They have their own bedroom and share a large Ferret Nation cage together. Cash and Presley are both 1.5 years old while Zeus is 3 and O'Malley is 7. They all love one another and sleep in a big pile! Cash and Presley love wrestling while O'Malley just loves a cuddle while watching TV and Zeus is happiest playing stalking games in blanket piles. They are the friendliest ferrets we've ever met and everybody who meets them loves them.

Tia is a Bare Eyed Cockatoo. She was shipped to a local pet store by a mass-breeder at far to young of an age, and subject to the stresses of pet store life. Her fate came into question when the store decided that she wasn't selling (after 9 months on the sale floor) and wanted to ship her to a buyer in Vancouver. She was purchased out of concern for her mental and physical well being. We do not support Pity Purchases as it only continues the cycle, and we do not support the breeding and selling of parrots in captivity. Parrots are wild animals that do not adjust well to the stresses of everyday human life. Parrots are prone to plucking and mutilating their feathers due to depression and frustration caused by captivity, even in the most loving of homes...the smallest things can upset them, whether it is a new cage, a new baby, a new fiance, a new house, or you going away on vacation.

We love Tia with all of our hearts. We respect her as a wild animal with the intelligence of a four year old, and the need for constant mental stimulation. She has confirmed our beliefs more then anything; she is a wild animal and she deserves to be wild. Sadly, she can't be...she was born in captivity, and is almost as far away as possible from her natural home in Australia. So we've dedicated ourselves to providing her with the best life we can. But we will continue to fight for the ending of breeding parrots for the pet trade.

To put it simply, Pepper is the King of all cats. We can't understand how his old family could have come to the choice that they made...when they brought a new kitten home, Pepper was upset; he started pooping outside of the litter box. Their solution was to have him euthanized, three years after they had adopted him from the SPCA. By chance, four days prior to his euthanasia appointment, we happened to hear of Pepper's situation and quickly agreed to take him in. Little did we know, he would quickly take over and move in! Although he isn't a huge fan of other cats, he has never had an accident outside of his litter box, and he loves all of the dogs that come through the house! He loves to be picked up, he'll wrap his arms around your neck and press his forhead into yours. He's a big Maine Coone Cross, weighing in at a healthy 22lbs!  We love Pepper and can't bear to think of how close he came to death!

Old Man was surrendered with his brother and they were both very sick with an upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately, his brother didn't make it. He has been with us ever since, it got to the point that he was too old to garner any interest for adoption. We've grown attached to him; he's very vocal and friendly, he lets us know whenever he wants attention or a treat by chirping. He loves getting scratches and leans into them, letting you scratch his stomach, chin, and armpits. He's very sweet!

We have a resident flock of eight pigeons. They all have unique personalities and all have names. There's Luna, Koosh, Isis, Rooster, Ichabod, Nicky, Snowy, and Bubbles. Some of them were found as strays, others were once wild and were injured and permanently disabled, unable to be released, and two were rescued after not selling at an auction. They live in a large aviary in our yard and get along well with one another, as long as they each get their own space!  Pigeons are very smart birds and are quite misunderstood! We are one of the only rescues in the area that accept injured wild pigeons.

Bandit (left) is an 11 year old Border Collie. We adopted him when he was 4 years old, from The Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection. We are his fourth home...his last one kept him tied up in his own waste, severely neglecting him! Despite that, Bandit is still a very happy, friendly dog...he loves everybody! Those people don't know what they're missing!

Milo (right) is a 4 year old Sheltie. He was found when he was a year old, running down 97th ave, terrified. We spent months trying to find his home, putting adds in the paper, notifying the pound, putting up posters, etc....but nobody was looking for him! He is extremely friendly, smart,
and devoted...and he always impresses people with his beautiful coat! He is the policeman of the house, quick to put a stop to any cat arguments or dog misbehavior...though, for some reason, he thinks it's okay to take food from the table!

Spike the Boston Terrier was given to us by another rescuer who took her in off the streets and had her spayed. She needed a primarily indoor home that could give her more attention, so once she was ready for a new home, she came to us! She has a mild luxating patella, and her rescuers have left credit at their pet for if she ever needs a surgery! She is extremely loving and  sweet, and acts like a much younger dog...she has endless stamina and loves to play! She can beat a much larger dog in a game of tug of war. She loves to lick, and can jump into your arms to lick your face. We love her, she's a great addition to our family and travels with us anywhere that allows dogs!

Suzy (left) is a 27 year old Ball Python. She was surrendered to us by a Zoologist when she was 13 years old. She has been with us for a very long time! She's a very gentle girl who has never gone off of her food, which Ball Pythons have a reputation for doing! She loves going to the ERAS reptile shows and meeting other Reptile Lovers!

Salazar (Right) is a young female Red Tailed Boa Constrictor. She was surrendered a few years ago when she was found abandoned in an apartment after her owner went to jail. She had been in the apartment for 6 months with no water! She was very dehydrated when she arrived, and has permanent creases in her scales from where her body bent during that time. Despite her past, she is a very friendly snake who doesn't seem to have a mean bone in her body. She also loves to go to the reptile show to help show the world that snakes aren't nearly as scary as they're made out to be!

We have a resident flock of six budgies. Budgies are very difficult to rehome if they aren't tame, so we've prodided our flock with an aviary full of perches and toys, and given them sanctuary. They thrive in flocks as that is how they naturally live, and are happiest being able to fly and interact naturally rather then being adopted out singly to live in small cages. We're going to build them a larger aviary during our renovations so we can continue to offer sanctuary to more budgies, to live a natural life in a free flight flock setting.

Ricky
is a 2 year old Crested Gecko who was given to us by a friend. He's very friendly and enjoys licking baby food off of your finger.

Cueball is a 10 year old Female Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula. She was surrendered by a school teacher that had her as a class pet for a few years, before getting a student with a horrible phobia of spiders. Poor cueball was also deemed "boring" by the class.  She is now a member of our family and in her younger years, enjoyed outings to day cares and elementary schools to teach the kids about arachnids.
