| Meditation Commonly when we imagine a meditating man, we see a calm looking person, with crossed legs and closed eyes, humming something like "Ommm". The truth is that meditation can be done in different ways. You can do it when you are walking or sitting on a bench in the park. It is more a condition of the mind than a condition of the body. There are different types of meditations: Transcendental Meditation, Zen meditation, Taoist meditation, Buddhist meditation. The prayer is also meditation. As the main goal of those practices is to calm your mind I won't bother you with details of this classification. How to meditate? If you are going to meditate for the first time it is better to find a quiet place. Take a comfortable posture (there is no need to be lotus if that is not comfortable for you). Close your eyes and relax all muscles, including the face. Try to keep your mind on something that you like. It can be an idea, picture, sound or word. Other way is not to focus but to open your mind. Leave your feelings and thoughts to pass through, without thinking about them. What is the physical aspect of meditation? Definitely our mind and body are strongly bounded. For example if you get angry it will immediately affect your blood pressure and pulse. So it can work in reverse. What we think and what we feel influences on your body. This is the way meditation works. It influences on the heart rate (it can lower it), decrease high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, easier breathing, decrease anxiety, depression, irritability and increase emotional stability. |
