| | | | | | | | Edges really interest me, the edge of the land, beaches and cliffs, expanses of wet sand and pools, constantly changing with the tide; the edges of woods either looking in or out. I'm attracted to the contrasts as one thing changes to another - land to water or woodland to open fields. I love the changing light and colour of different seasons. The cool pale light of a winters day, the warm dusty light of summer, the fresh clean colours of spring and the fiery glow of autumn with its dark skies.
Seascapes mean a lot to me as I spent a great deal of my childhood living by the sea in Gibraltar, Cornwall, Scotland and Malta. Now I live 100 miles from the coast but try to get there as often as I can. Working at the coast the light changes dramatically and it's essential to work fast to catch the moment.
Marks are important to me - I like to use a rich language of descriptive marks that suggests the textures and shape of the land. I like to work plein air in oil paint as it is so responsive and so quick to change to catch a flash of light on the water or a sunlit field. I also like to use mixed media, choosing the appropriate tool for the marks I want. |
