A wide variety of subjects interest me though my first love is probably landscape, including seascapes. I love the changing light and colour, the cool pale light of a winters day, the warm dusty light of summer, the fresh clean colours of spring and the fiery glow of autumn with its dark skies. Working at the coast the light changes dramatically and it's essential to work fast to catch the moment.
I realise I like the edges - the edge of the land, beaches and cliffs, expanses of wet sand, constantly changing with the tide and the edges of woods either looking in or out - but it's the contrasts as one thing changes to another - land to water or woodland to open fields.
I find that I prefer to work plein air in oil paint as it is so responsive and so quick to change to catch a flash of light on the water or a sunlit field. I generally prefer to use watercolours in the studio.
I like to use mixed media, choosing the appropriate tool for the marks I want.
Sketching my cats is another subject I enjoy I and spent a very interesting artist in residency sketching the orang utans and gorillas at the zoo. Flowers is another interest with a new series of work in progress, working from small studies of flowers and taking them forward to larger abstracted canvasses.
