Vivien Blackburn: Sketchbooks
This site shows some images from my sketchbooks. Most are plein air sketches done in the landscape or by the sea, looking at the light, colour, mood, weather, season of the day and trying to catch that sense of time and place.
These lead into larger canvasses and paintings, which develop the ideas and may become quite abstracted.
Some are sketches of the orang utans and gorillas at the zoo, done one cold February. They were behind thick glass in heated enclosues - I was in the cold but able to work from literally inches away from them.
Several sketchbooks are in use, keeping books according to subject matter: separated into seascapes, landscapes, flowers and life drawing/animals
In my books I'll use a wide range of media - whatever the image needs, so one page may be watercolour, followed by a charcoal sketch or a sketch in oil paints or objects stuck in, photographs, written comments, reminders, lists - anything I need to help with later work.
