'Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleaves of care' - Shakespeare, Macbeth

(Shakespeares spelling)

This is a book I made during my degree, which I did as a mature student, juggling family, a part time job and my degree - I often felt that I wasn't coping and the balls were dropping all over the place!   I hated my job - but it fitted in with the degree and was near to home and paid my uni fees - I was bored there and felt trapped and claustrophobic - these images are about these feelings and about the different 'me' I had to be at work, college and home.

These images are all created within the computer from photographs and scanned objects.  They are best seen as a slide show - click on one image and then use the forward arrows.

I photographed my surroundings in the office and at college - blinds on my office windows like prison bars, high buildings looming, the clock ruling my life - time to go to work - time to go into class - time to rush to the shops - time for exams/assessments, not much time left to .......

My student union card and security pass for work had the same picture - 2 sides of me.  Printed acetate sheets are inserted in the book so that they add to images - the images changing as the pages turn and more or less layers are built up, up to 4 acetates at a time.  Some are images over images, some text over images, building a new and more complex image - like my life, multi layered.  Stevie Smith's 'Not waving but Drowning' weaves through the book, expressing my feelings at the time.

Printed on acetate and Canson pastel paper, with copper wire and hand made paper.
