What is Kosovo?

     Kosovo is part of what was once called Yugoslvia.  It unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia on Feb 17, 2008.    Yugoslavia once consisted of the republics of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia-Montenegro and Macedonia.   Today, each of those countries has become independent, including Montenegro in the fall of 2006. 
     Kosovo is made up of a number of ethnic groups, including Albanians, Serbians, Roma, Turks and others.  Estimates on the exact number vary widely.  For instance the number of Albanians in Kosovo ranges from 88 percent to 95 percent depending on the source.
     Kosovo made the front page of American newspapers in 1998-99 as war broke out between the Albanian majority population and the Serbian government.  The war ended after NATO intervened in the conflict, having learned dreadful lessons in Bosnia that the bloodshed might continue unabated.
