The Sculpture of William Girard

Was Bill Girard more of a sculptor or a painter? Wow. Let's just stipulate that he was a Gemini... and a man of many talents. So far as I can tell, Bill seemed to believe that certain images wanted to be born in two dimensions while others required three. Either way, it was his job to give them life.

I can say with certainty that he felt that working in three-dimensions strengthened an artist’s ability to create two-dimensional forms.

Please note that the selection of sculpture shown here is certainly incomplete.  For example, Girard’s Lord of the Rings chess set is only represented here by two pieces. Click either one of them to view all of the pieces in that set.

Bill’s ceramic work is also underrepresented here. Unfortunately, the quality of the available photos leaves me disinclined to add them to this website.

The Advocates
Medium: Bronze
Dimensions: @15" High
Artist: William Girard

Perched on their lofty seats, these advocates appear as raptors dressed in the garb of British barristers. Far below them, but of intense interest, is a worm. Does it represent the rest of us? Demonstrate the relative power on either side of the equation?

This particular angle captures the evident disdain and arrogance that many outside of the legal profession associate with attorneys. Girard portrays these advocates in the guise of raptors dressed in the garb of British barristers.

It appears that this piece conflates imagery from the Puss 'n Boots story with the Pied Piper story. The visual emphasis on the boot in this image is further supported by the apparently undressed male figure riding the rat's tail. The latter is also a reference to a detail of the original Puss 'n Boots story.
